Organic Milk vs. Standard Milk - Serious Question Here
Why is it that the organic milk I buy at the store has an expiration date longer than standard milk?
I mean, one would think that the organic milk with "no additives" would not last as long but for some reason is lasts longer. Can anyone explain?: ![]()

Found this online.
Q: I noticed the expiration date on organic milk is usually a month long. I wants to know, what makes organic milk last so long? A: We went to Organic Valley for your answer, and it says the expiration date on ANY type of milk depends upon how it was pasteurized. Organic milk AS WELL as conventional milk, can be pasteurized using Ultra High Temperature or High Temperature Short Time. If milk was processed using High Temperature Short Time that means it was heated to 161-point-5 degrees for 15 seconds which destroys 99-point-9 percent of bacteria. HTST is the federal standard for milk processors. Ultra High Temperature pasteurization involves superheating and cooling milk at extreme speeds, and extends the product's shelf life from 17 to 45 days. So Emily, you probably have Ultra High Temperature processed milk. I always drank organic milk in England but when we moved to arizona I did notice the organic milk often didn't taste so great. I switched to a non organic but local milk, much better http://www.shamrockfarms.net tastes like English milk ![]() |
