How do you get traffic in mainstream, besides SEO?

Are there any traffic brokers in mainstream?
I have a mainstream site and Im doing ok with SEO, but I want more traffic. I dont know where to go to buy it.

There is actually a VERY significant amount of link directories to serve your fancy. Not to mention if you submit it to http://dmoz.org all the other directories will pick it up as well ;)

There are TONS of directory scripts that query the dmoz database bieng used by thousands of mainstream link directory sites.

Not sure of any mainstream traffic brokers :/

But other ways to get traffic would be to simply target other traffic sources, which will increase your overall se exposure across more portals.

Such as news groups, article sites, video sites, social sites or build info/guide/forums sites to help branch into related fields.

You could try the 1000's of directories, local searches, search engine ppc and site ppc, pre-buys for brand exposure on forums, ect..

Or like some you could take the easy way and buy stolen popup ppc traffic...

Go to an adtech show, you'd be surprised how many different vendors show up to sell you traffic and tons of it

I submitted to dmoz a year ago, still havent heard back from them lol. I guess it can take up to 2 years to get reviewed and approved for some people.

- viral communication:
people talk about fun stuff they saw somewhere
example:
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/370/seagalep5.jpg
same thing with a small reference to the website.

- video and picture post on famous website.

- produce a flash game (a viral one is better)

- produce a software (get backlink)
to best idea is to produce a software in which the user need to access your website.

- make a forum
it makes text, and text is google food.

Then you might want to contact me for a cheaper solution. . . . and I did not mean Google Adwords, I meant Google "traffic broker."

that is 100% correct. it is impossible for your 'college lesbian fisting tgp' to get in the new york times but if your site is interesting and fresh you could possibly get a mention in there and maybe get syndicated in papers around the world. this is more valuable than any advertising or clickthroughs you could buy.

Well syndicated national would be like $50k for 30 seconds, but would totally try it on a small scale if its worth it. And I could find a small radio broadcasting show to buy a spot on.

Pretty much every industry has trade magazines, several of them. If you have a good quality site that either makes money or would interest others, give a trade magazine ad a try.

- buy traffic: bad idea imo, this is an artificial presence
- trade link: it means that the users is not happy where he is.

the recipe is: content + baclink.

not always true.
a user might click links when he is thinking: "well, I got everything I needed but let me check those other sites just to make sure OR be more convinced that buying from the current site is the wisest decision OR maybe I can buy more things that are similar to what i'm buying in this site OR I wonder what those blue things with that underline are"
