I Got Jacked Over the Weekend...........

So I went to the ATM on Friday to get some cash out but the machine wouldn't allow me.... after going to another ATM and getting the same result, I decided to call my bank to see what the issue might be.

After 30 minutes of being on the phone with the fraud dept., I find out that somebody took out $2,000 out of my account from various ATM's in the duration of 4 days ($500 a day) in locations that I have never used. I never lost my check card and have never left my wallet with anyone. After speaking to a friend, I was told that some people can create your Debit card after simply swiping it and entering your pin code at a local store. Luckily the bank has temporarily reissued the money to me until the case is finalized.

Stay away from swiping your debit card folks - I have heard of stories like these but I would have never thought in a million years that this would happen to me.

Yep, gotta love how Interac gave out rave reviews of safety, "never carry cash again, be safe!", and now, you can't even protect yourself from the double-swipe/fraud machines.

The newest wave of fraud machines, are where you do the swipe yourself, enter your code, etc, and it approves the transaction. Secretly, you paid no money and then the owner of the machine clones your card and jacks you outta more money.

So be safe, stick to the original $ bills ya'll.

Well from what I hear its a lot safer using the card as "credit" than "debit" when it prompts you after swiping

Wow! Im sorry to hear that.

I've heard that if you lose your card, thieves can put it in a de-scrambler (which costs something like $700-$1200 CDN) and retrieve your pin. I've also heard that alot of independantly owned gas stations have been caught defrauding people by such methods listed above.

Bloody shysters!

That blows. I hear that SKIMMING or CLONING of cars is becoming like an epidemic now.

"Credit card cloning or skimming has become more widespread since the ‘chip-and-pin’ technology was introduced."

Using your ATM card at ATMs are GENERALLY ok, but you MUST hide your pin, because IF someone has installed the skimming technology on the ATM or at your local grocery store, you could get jacked if they know your PIN.

I have started using my Amex for most of my purchases and of course pay it down every month to avoid interest charges.

If you have the choice between debit and credit, always pick credit. Credit card refunds and chargebacks are much easier. I only use debit when I absolutely have to.

Yeah, thats stupid.

More than likely it was stolen online and someone wrote it to a card.

Don't use shitty backwoods looking ATM machines either

Just change your NIP every now and then, don't carry too much in your account and pay with credit when you can because it's not you're money that is lost, but the credit card company.

Also, don't just throw your receipt or leave it in the trash. Often those have your FULL INFO on them, including CC number and exp date. Before throwing it away be sure its one of the ones that have all the numbers blocked out.

Yes this happened to be with my Citibank card apparently. THey sent me a new card in the mail and said that I was a victim of skimming and to activate the new card and change my pin.
Wasnt sure how they arrived at that conclusion but they would not give me more info.

Nothing got stolen from though thank god.

Out here in Montreal (WestIsland part) it's getting bad. Got hit twice in less then 3 months. Got back every dime they took from me each time. It's the new way to rob banks. think about it. 100 people they ripe off for a 1000$ each. 100K in there pocket. And it's easy to get 100 people cause everyone is using there ATM cards these days.

Now every 2 weeks I change my pin code, so I don't have to go through all the paper work with the banks. So if I get nailed again I'll know where my card got copied.

Yeah I know but having my ATM card declined at the Ralphs was kind of embarrassing. The screw with your daily limit automatically if they think theres a security breach and they dont tell you. Glad I had my checkbook.
