I Got Jacked Over the Weekend...........

So I went to the ATM on Friday to get some cash out but the machine wouldn't allow me.... after going to another ATM and getting the same result, I decided to call my bank to see what the issue might be.

After 30 minutes of being on the phone with the fraud dept., I find out that somebody took out $2,000 out of my account from various ATM's in the duration of 4 days ($500 a day) in locations that I have never used. I never lost my check card and have never left my wallet with anyone. After speaking to a friend, I was told that some people can create your Debit card after simply swiping it and entering your pin code at a local store. Luckily the bank has temporarily reissued the money to me until the case is finalized.

Stay away from swiping your debit card folks - I have heard of stories like these but I would have never thought in a million years that this would happen to me. :(

martinsc 04-30-2007 09:42 AM

damn, that sucks...
i've heard about a few more people that the same shit happened to them...

madawgz 04-30-2007 09:47 AM

that really sucks, you need to be careful when you give your card to someone

and always hide your pin

Ravage 04-30-2007 09:54 AM

Yep, gotta love how Interac gave out rave reviews of safety, "never carry cash again, be safe!", and now, you can't even protect yourself from the double-swipe/fraud machines.

The newest wave of fraud machines, are where you do the swipe yourself, enter your code, etc, and it approves the transaction. Secretly, you paid no money and then the owner of the machine clones your card and jacks you outta more money.

So be safe, stick to the original $ bills ya'll.

Don't swipe your card at stores? What is the point of having the card then?

Miss Munki 04-30-2007 10:17 AM

I'm sorry to hear that Moe, it can be so violating when something like this happens. I've been there...no fun:mad:

tony286 04-30-2007 10:18 AM

Well from what I hear its a lot safer using the card as "credit" than "debit" when it prompts you after swiping

az_bobby 04-30-2007 10:56 AM

search youtube for "the real hustle" and youll see ways people get your card info

shoeaholicanon 04-30-2007 11:01 AM

wow that sucks. well, i've not heard enough of these stories to stop using debt. In fact, its the first i've heard of it - but sux dude.

Masterchief 04-30-2007 11:02 AM

just dont do purchases that require a PIN

VanessaGT 04-30-2007 11:16 AM

Wow! Im sorry to hear that.

I've heard that if you lose your card, thieves can put it in a de-scrambler (which costs something like $700-$1200 CDN) and retrieve your pin. I've also heard that alot of independantly owned gas stations have been caught defrauding people by such methods listed above.

Bloody shysters!

OY 04-30-2007 11:22 AM

That blows. I hear that SKIMMING or CLONING of cars is becoming like an epidemic now.

"Credit card cloning or skimming has become more widespread since the ‘chip-and-pin’ technology was introduced."

Using your ATM card at ATMs are GENERALLY ok, but you MUST hide your pin, because IF someone has installed the skimming technology on the ATM or at your local grocery store, you could get jacked if they know your PIN.

I have started using my Amex for most of my purchases and of course pay it down every month to avoid interest charges.

mattz 04-30-2007 11:30 AM

I always use the card as credit rather than debit, otherwise it charges me a fee

J. Falcon 04-30-2007 11:54 AM

You got your money back? You are very lucky.

WiredGuy 04-30-2007 12:05 PM

If you have the choice between debit and credit, always pick credit. Credit card refunds and chargebacks are much easier. I only use debit when I absolutely have to.

Another great usage of viral marketing. Sorry to hear that someone got your information.

Jimmy Rock 04-30-2007 12:53 PM

No shit..That's exactly why I'm all for thumbprints for transactions.. and if you have nothing to hid and your not a crminal then you have nothing to hide by giving your prints

Swish 04-30-2007 12:55 PM

I was just thinking about this the other day when getting gas. You never know who's shady and who's not and if they're trying to steal your info. :Oh crap

czarina 04-30-2007 12:58 PM

ouch, I bet that was upsetting!
You got lucky that your bank believed you... I've heard of people fighting their banks for months over situations similar to this.

Yeah, thats stupid.

More than likely it was stolen online and someone wrote it to a card.

Don't use shitty backwoods looking ATM machines either

Evil E 04-30-2007 01:00 PM

Just change your NIP every now and then, don't carry too much in your account and pay with credit when you can because it's not you're money that is lost, but the credit card company.

Also, don't just throw your receipt or leave it in the trash. Often those have your FULL INFO on them, including CC number and exp date. Before throwing it away be sure its one of the ones that have all the numbers blocked out.

jmk 04-30-2007 01:17 PM

Yep happens :(
Sorry man!!! Hope it will all work out!

MissMina 04-30-2007 01:19 PM

Yes this happened to be with my Citibank card apparently. THey sent me a new card in the mail and said that I was a victim of skimming and to activate the new card and change my pin.
Wasnt sure how they arrived at that conclusion but they would not give me more info.

Nothing got stolen from though thank god.

JohnnyPearl 04-30-2007 01:31 PM

Out here in Montreal (WestIsland part) it's getting bad. Got hit twice in less then 3 months. Got back every dime they took from me each time. It's the new way to rob banks. think about it. 100 people they ripe off for a 1000$ each. 100K in there pocket. And it's easy to get 100 people cause everyone is using there ATM cards these days.

Now every 2 weeks I change my pin code, so I don't have to go through all the paper work with the banks. So if I get nailed again I'll know where my card got copied.

Yeah I know but having my ATM card declined at the Ralphs was kind of embarrassing. The screw with your daily limit automatically if they think theres a security breach and they dont tell you. Glad I had my checkbook. :winkwink:

AR-Melody 04-30-2007 02:57 PM

Wow! Its amazing what people can get away with, I've never heard of that before but THANKS for the heads up.
