ICQ Etiquette....EVERYONE INSIDE NOW!

OK, since I started putting myself out there and working for lots more people I have been slammed with icq's, and one of the things that irritates me to no end is when someone I don't know and have no clue who they are icq's me and says "hey" and that is it

wtf!...when you don't know someone and they don't know you, don't you think it would be best to introduce yourself first? are these the same type of people you have never met that walk up to you at a party and stand in front of you and say "hey" and wait for you to respond?

here is a great one, just happened a minute ago

[06:01] NAMEHERE: you need any web work done?
[06:01] Jace: excuse me?
[06:01] Jace: do I know you?
[06:02] NAMEHERE: do you have to know me to answer a question like that? :-D
[06:03] NAMEHERE: :-\
[06:03] Jace: web work is a very general term, and yes, lots of scammers in this biz, unless I know you I am not gunna even think about working with you.....plus, mught wanna try some better intial icq etiquette when initializing conversations with people you don't know

now, does he actually think that he is going to get a ton of business that way?

I don't know how people like that survive. They are stuck on 7th grade mentalities.

i used to love icq years ago, was instant and all... great stuff. now, i find it annoying. when I'm working and focused i usualy don't want to be disturbed unless it's important or from the people i work with (employees, partner, etc).

i think email works best, it keeps better track of all that was said and it integrates better with my calendar, and other programs i use to organize my tasks and all.

bottom line is, if it ain't someone i closely work with, i prefer not using ICQ. but god, some people are slow on replying to emails, and i think the question i always ask myself when i send an email is: is he gonna see it? is it gonna be buried in spam?... people seem to give a higher pripority to their instant messengers and its unfortunate. Bah... /endrant

Yep... totally with you on this one.. Really does my head in.. How hard can it be to say.. 'He, it's XXX from XXX'.. ugh..

Even worse then they refer to you as 'bud' or 'mate' when you don't even know the person and have never done business with them.

I'm kind of the same, although I am employing someone to do affiliate support via ICQ for me.. It's just too time consuming for me.. For people I know, I love ICQ.. when it goes down, it causes chaos for my business tho.

Good point,
Sometimes just a plain, "Hey are you busy?; Got a sec?; Hit me up when you get a chance. etc" even if you are good friends, sometimes friends get busy.
And for the love of god don't get offended if someone doesn't reply right away. I like to eat sometimes, possibly even take a break from the computer, and I take 20 minute shits.

I can't stand people who blanket spam or just pick up your icq off a message board or something and throw themselves at you. Time is money and these people don't seem to have respect for other people's time. Much better if they send a polite email introducing themself and their business, and allow you to follow up if you would wish to.

I always like the...
"Hey, I have a question."

And then nothing else. Days, weeks and sometime months go by and you don't hear the actual question... Later on, they follow up with "Hey, hit me up when you're on, I have a question."

JUST ASK THE FUCKING QUESTION!

Idiot_on_ICQ: "You there?"

People, on ICQ it doesn't matter if the person is "there". Just say what it is you want to say for cripes sake.

Half the time you get their message hours later, you reply with "Yes, I'm here".... then the person who initiated the contact gets back to you later with -- "looks like I missed you again, let me know when you're on" etc and so on etc etc.

JUST SAY IT.

If you just say it the first time, the other person can give you an answer when then get it rather than playing the "are you there?" game.

Simple concept, so hard for so many people to figure out.

Agree, I usually go: it's Chaze from DWHS, are you available for a design ect..

And I don't think people should get mad if you just drop off without saying bye, that's what's great about IM you can do several at once.

I get them and send them to and from people on my contact list all the time, doesn't bother me in the least.

I usually will just type "ping" or "psst"
The reason: because I don't want to type a whole bunch of shit if the person is not there to respond.

If I don't get an INSTANT RESPONSE then I will stop using my INSTANT MESSAGER and move on to another form of communication,

OR

I will move on to someone else who is available on IM, just depends.

People say shit in IM's that they would never say or do in emails for some reason.

When's the last time you emailed someone and just said "Are you there?"
or "Hey..."
or "I saw your post on GFY"

Unreal.

It's like some people go braindead when they open their IM thingy.

you hit that nail right on the motherfucking head. I hate icq or any other messenger for biz, i prefer email. Like link trading, you add a person for 1 hardlink exchange and you got another contact added. So in no time you got like 200 contacts that you dont talk to for the next years. But like you said email has it downs too, mainly spam filters. But still I always prefer email.

In Fact, IM's make it sounds more personnal, and person feels more confortable to communicate more directly with you, for some reasons they're few poeples that does'nt know what respect is.
