I saw CNN or something news channel the other day talking about the Virginia gunman and they were saying the law does not allow you to lock up people with mental problems unless they are a danger to themselves or others. The inferance being that this is a weakness in the law and if you could detain anyone with mental problems things like this wouldn't have happenned!

I was thinking maybe it would be a better idea to just not let people with mental health problems have access to firearms?

i believe there is a question asking if you have ever been diagnosed with a mental illness on the form that you fill out when you get your background check when legaly buying a firearm.

I may be wrong, cant remember if i've ever bought a firearm or not. I may or may not have any guns.

when one guy has one and nobody else does, things can get very bad. Criminals will carry one, well just because they are criminals and thats what they do. Keep in mind, it wasnt illegal for the Cho guy to own a gun. It was illegal for him to kill 32 people.

Now consider this. If the law abiding people were all carrying guns, would Cho have been able to kill 32 people? I dont think so.

Making guns illegal will NOT solve anything. There are already way too many available. Making them illegal will not stop gun crime. Its already illegal to kill people, and that didnt stop murders from happening. Its illegal to drink and drive, doesnt seem to have stopped it. Its illegal to exceed the speed limit, but show me someone here who says they have never been speeding, and I'll point out a liar to you.

I'm not saying that making sure everyone is armed would be a better situation, but making guns illegal isnt going to stop things at all. But perhaps if the criminals knew that everyone else was armed, they may reconsider trying to hurt people when they know they would probably get themselves killed before they could finish thier act of crime.

There are a lot of people out there with mental problems. Depression is a mental illness not a defect. If that is the case, we would go back to the comment about 1930 Germany with no one owning guns. Most everyone has experience depression at some point in their life!

Yes, we have criminals and some have guns. Just like every other country but the chances of ever seeing a gun here in Holland are very, very small. In other words its waaaaay less dangerous that a few criminals have guns than that every other citizin would have guns to so called protect their families. Know what i mean?

Holland is quite safe eventhough there are guns here and here. Holland wouldnt be nearly as safe as besides those few criminals with guns the rest of people here would own "legal" guns.

And thats the same story with every other country out there. Cept for America. ONLY Americans keep claiming its safer with guns and in the meantime they have a huge fucking gun problem. Only America...

It's not funny to read the everlasting dispute between Americans and Europeans when it comes to gun control.

I've lived in both places for a long time and try to understand both points of view. My opinion, as a European-American, is ambivalent.

First of, not every country in Europe is strict on gun control. Spain isn't, Belgium isn't , and in beautiful Switzerland it's mandatory for adult males who served to have an assault rifle at home. Yet, homicide rates are low in these countries.

Devastating and twisted things like in Virginia happen in countries with strict gun control too, may be not as frequently. I remember similar incidents in Germany, where you have to jump through hoops to own a gun legally.

The reason why homicide rates are high in the US is not solely due of the easy accessibility of guns. There are social issues as well.

The 2nd Amendment, on which gun ownership in the US is based has advantages too. It was not designed that Americans can walk the streets with a six gun in their belt like John Wayne, it was written as a counter balance to the government, means, in case the government goes wacko, Americans have the right to counteract. The idea might be delusional in these days, but may be not.

I have a 87 year old great aunt who grew up in Nazi Germany. We once asked her how the German people could ever allow a fruitcake like Hitler to take over, especially when only 25-30% of the German population supported the Nazis?

Her answer was: "What could the rest of us have done? Attack Hitler's paratroopers with our bare hands?"

I'n this case armed citizens might have been an advantage. Considered that WWII costed almost 60 million lives the price for armed citizens seems low. I am not saying that WW II wouldn't have happened if the Germans were armed, but it would have been more difficult for the Nazis to drag innocent people out of their homes and ship them off to Auschwitz.
