Bottled Water vs. Tap Water - What's your preference & why?

I'm going through the complete physical at the doctor's office this past week and have come to the realization that if I didn't drink coffee, iced tea or softdrinks then I probably would die from dehydration!

Seriously unless I go to Vegas or some other desert type climate I usually drink ONLY one liter of water a WEEK! Not good. Probably the reason I've put on 15 pounds in as many months and have acquired a nice "Webmaster Gut".

So I ask the doctor if it matters whether I drink bottled water or tap water and he looks at me like I'm crazy! He said that if I just liked throwing money away go ahead and buy all the bottled water I want but bottom line he said that the municipal water sources of most major U.S. cities will give you water just as good as any you can buy in the bottle.

I've got a filter on my kitchen faucet so I guess I'm good to go.

How about you guys... Bottled or Tap???

Ya, so long as you have a good filter on your end, it doesn't really matter.

Otherwise, the pipes pick up a lot en route that you could probably do without.

problem with tap water in my town is that you taste all of the stuff they use to purify it with. it has a nasty taste over the last several years

Bottled because the water quality is pretty bad in this city, semi desert.
But if I go anywhere and the waters o.k to drink then taps fine for me.

Definitely bottled! It honestly tastes different to me. Especially since I moved into my new apartment...water tastes funny here and looks all cloudy sometimes. Don't want anything to do with that.

don't softdrinks dehydrate you?

I drink bottled water all the time. mostly because its easy, I can grab a bottle and take it with me where ever.
I buy the water from costco, so its like 5 bucks for 36 bottles or something like that.
In the summer I go through alot, probably 20 bottles a day between me and my gf. Tap water tastes like ass now, even filtered.

I just stared drinking a lot of water! its a pain in the ass to pick up the 24 bottles of 500 ml's water at the store but its so worth it.

I quit drinking coke yesterday. I was a coke junkie and I got the worst caffiene headache last night. I was so worn out that i went to bed at 10 pm.

I had to pound painkillers to make the head pain go away.

Water is key Im told!

No. Generically: carbonic acid and sugar. Neither of which is a dehydrating agent (unless you count the small - nearly inconsequential - amount of water that would be used in metabolizing the sugar).

That's so long as you keep the booze out of the softdrink, that is. :-)

i always check the tap water where ever i am to see if it tastes okay because it's nice to have an easy, free rehydration system around - but in some places the water from the tap just looks scary. parts of phoenix i lived in had water come out of the tap that had sediment in it that settled to the bottom of the glass if you left it on the counter and it never ran clear. although i have to admit, when i was broke i still drank it. :P

If your area has good quality tap water and you have a filter then you should be good to go. Just remember that if you reuse bottles you need to wash them thoroughly before refilling them with tap water.

Bottled water companies make a killing. I saw a news item recently where it was revealed that Coca Cola Amatil (Australia) pay $2 per megalitre to tap a spring... then sell it for around $2 a litre. Even taking into account the costs of bottling, distribution and profit a 1000X markup seems just a little excessive.

Err actually a megalitre would be 1,000,000 litres, not 1,000 litres... so the markup is even more extreme

bottled.
why? tap tastes horrible and has lots of impurities, etc. in it.
If you have a filter installed, that's a different story.

a bit more at you thinking that your mineralwater is all so kosher.

In most big cities tap water = recycled water. They run toilet water (shit & piss) water through cleaning vats, using a ton of chemicals to purify it.

In some small towns they indeed use underground water.

Mineral water is usually very pure, as it runs through very think layers of soil, thus being filtered naturally.

Tap water is fine for me. The best water is when you go to the mountains, find the spring and drink water that comes directly from the ground.

i prefer bottled or filtered through bitra filter or something similar. i don't know about where you guys live but here, when i pour myself a glass straight from the tap the water is white and takes nearly a minute to appear clear.

yeah, most bottled water isn't any more pure than tap water but depending on where your water comes form, sewage systems do send water back into rivers, lakes, ect after filtering best they can. i read an article saying there are traces of things like prozac and such in tap water.

Well, I suppose Helsinki (~600.000 people) is a small town in a global scale.

..well, if you're happy about drinking mineral water..knock yourself out. It's just normal water, doesn't matter if it's been 'filtered in through ancient soil in the andis'

I used to drink at least 2 litres of pepsi per day, i quit doing that in late 2004. lost some weight, feel better and now i drink about 2-3 litres of water per day. water helps prevent cancer.

yeah, i think people are a bit brainwashed thinking bottled water is so pure but where i used to live the water would go through extremes of tasting like mold/mildew or clorine. terrible stuff even though it came straight from lake erie. here in ottawa it tastes fine but still very cloudy.

Victoria, Australia uses large protected water catchment areas, with gravity feeding to regional reservoirs. I live near a coastal city but the water itself originates in the mid-state mountains.

The only reason I drink bottled water is because I like it really cold and am too lazy to make ice. When I had a fridge with the water/ice in the door, I did that instead.

I agree

When I traveled through the Rocky Mountains for about 7 months a year on business in the early eighties you could actually pull off the road and do this.

Now that I live in Atlanta I think it would be cheaper to actually drive to the store for some nice bottled "Spring Water" than to drive to the nearest mountain stream.

To bad the vast majority of bottled water is nothing more than packaged and creatively wrapped municipal water.

What is worse is that many doubt how good of a job the government actually does in regard to our water supply.

Yep. Bottled water is... BULLSHIT!

Everybody should have a basic filter at home by now, they are not that expensive. I have one built in the fridge and one on the kitchen sink, both do adequate jobs and I can?t tell the difference between my filtered water and 90% of bottled water out there, tastes virtually identical.

One rule in life, you don't pay for sex or water! You can get both free.

Then again I've broken both rules, paying for sex is easier and bottled water safer in other countries...

Is that one of those funky machines that creates drinkable water from moisture in the air? Those make me nervous.

Ya.. well here in Canada im all about tap... especially in the winter... nice and cold... I also spend time in California during the year and wouldnt dare drink tap unless it was filtered. Not to mention its pretty much a way of life to drink bottled there also.

I drink bottled water for only one reason.... it tastes a HELL of a lot better to me.

I do not care about anything else.
