AEBN spamming through ICQ?

I just had an interesting conversation with someone from AEBN via ICQ just now.

Check this out:

will(13:43 PM) : hellow
Turboface(13:43 PM) : Hello there
will(13:43 PM) : do you own a web-site
Turboface(13:43 PM) : Umm, ya.
Turboface(13:43 PM) : Who is this?
will(13:44 PM) : i would lke to build you a FREE pay per view movie theater for yor site.all you do is collect the check
Turboface(13:45 PM) : AEBN is spamming through ICQ now?
Turboface(13:46 PM) : Where did you get this ICQ number?
will(13:47 PM) : wasn't hard
Turboface(13:47 PM) : I'm sure it wasn't - I'm just curious.
will(13:48 PM) : jjust want to if you want to make money
will(13:48 PM) : aww
Turboface(13:48 PM) : No, I'm just in this biz for all the free porn I can get.
will(13:49 PM) : that's cool
Turboface(13:49 PM) : Do yourself a favor - Don't go marketing like this. You're just gonna piss alot of people off and make AEBN look bad.
Turboface(13:51 PM) : AEBN is a huge and respected company - and this is not the way you should go trying to sell your stuff.
will(13:52 PM) : on the real i signed up 10 sites last week.and i made a lot of friends
Turboface(13:52 PM) : Ya, but how many people did you tick off? Not smart.
will(13:53 PM) : about three or four
Turboface(13:53 PM) : Do you actually work for AEBN?
will(13:54 PM) : [email protected]
Turboface(13:54 PM) : That doesn't even look like an email address.
will(13:54 PM) : try it
Turboface(13:54 PM) : Listen, idiot - don't contact me again.
will(14:04 PM) : Ok I am sorry. You are right it is a funny looking email but I really do work for AEBN and I too think we are a huge and respected company. I am sorry if I have crossed line with you but I am just tring to make this company even bigger with your help. Again I am sorry to have bugged you in theis manner. So when did you learn about AEBN--It is always nice to know where people see our stuff.
Turboface(14:06 PM) : If AEBN is going to spam like this - they at least should get someone that has better spelling and grammar skills than you do. You make them look .. cheap.
will(14:07 PM) : When you type so fast sometimes letters drop off---
Turboface(14:08 PM) : Why are we still talking? - Go bug someone else.

I can't believe that one of the big video content providers out there actually have this halfwit going around, door-to-door like this.

Was I too rough on this guy or what?

A MAJOR part of our economy is made by cold calling
From Insurance to Gym memberships. And most business would not survive without it.

Yeah that's more like cold calling than spamming. I see nothing wrong with contacting someone one like that.

This happened to me, too. I went for it, and then the custom page they designed for my site sucked. So I didn't go any further. In retrospect, it was pretty spamalicious.

Cold calling = Telemarketing.

No one likes telemarketers. They are even more annoying. They spam in the 'real world'.

no "cold calling" is when you call numbers randomly.

Folks with numbers no name is cold calling.

The numbers that are listed publicly with address and name etc are not considered "cold calling" since you have Identifying info on them.

At one time in the Telemarketing days, I had the big black book that told me families general income on streets and neighborhoods. That was my first job when I was 16.

damn that was some good money for my age.

I miss cold calling long distance numbers.

spamming webmasters is like spamming business, it rarely works and it pisses off a lot of people. (call it "cold calling" if you want)

Difference is, in the online world, the person will turn around, come here and let us know of their greeaaat marketing tactics...

In the real world, you dont know that the company calling you called 341941 company before.

on a different note, for people in Canada, have you been "selectioned" for a free Rogers-ATT cell phone too?

I got "selectioned" like 3 times. and my roomate a couple times, they dont even know your name when they call.... what a stupid scam...

But yeah, I hate webmaster spam. with a passion.

Spam the dumb surfers all you want, but dont come up to me asking if I want you damn content!

Just have good content, good advertising (not spam, just board presence, banners on webmaster sites, show presence) and when I want to buy, ill go see you. (same for hosting and such)

Spam me, and you lost me forever

Hello Webmasters,

This is Robert from AEBN. I am very sorry about the ICQ message that Turboface got. We do not sit around the office all day and spam people. We do spend a large amount of money on advertising. Will is new here at AEBN and is still learning how everything works. Please do not be upset with him. He doesn't understand the do's and don'ts online.

Thanks ;)

Yup, i dont know why anyone gets angry about being approached to do business. If the guy was offering free money it would be acceptable.

Anyone who has read my posts on spam knows where I stand. That said -

That was not FUCKING SPAM!

Jesus Christ, if someone comes up to you at a show and starts trying to do business with you, do you scream spam?!

Hell, how much more personal could the guy get? He wasn't a bot, he was just trying to hook something up.. It was a sales call sure, but hardly an offensive one.

Cheers,
Backov

Essentially he was....

I mean he wasnt asking anyone to buy anything.

He hit me up, we chatted, I informed him I have been in talked with April over there on another deal, and he said thanks for my time.

No need to get all twisted.....IMHO

Surely they must have know about this spam technique. I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he opened exactly the same way with me.

In regards to ?Will is new here at AEBN and is still learning how everything works?, don?t you train or supervise your staff?

It pisses me off when people take the contact details from us only to use them for spamming our members.

Its all good throw my sig up

Was I too rough on this guy or what?
i had an almost identical conversation with someone from aebn.net her name was april and claimed to be new, i tried to onvince her that icq spamming is not very smart, apparently they feel otherwise

Did you notice that no matter what you put before @aebn.net it all points to aebn.net.

[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
@aebn.net

Everything you type will point to aebn.net. It's kinda cool...you can do the same thing with other domain names.

Try this "[email protected]" it should point to the main page of your favorite site...

Well first of all - let me be the first to congratulate you on your 100th post. <applause>

Secondly - I don't want you (and a few others) to think I am whining about this at all. I personally took offense in it to a certain degree, but then again - so did others. I personally have nothing but for respect for AEBN, as you can see from the original post. You gotta admit that it was 'spamish' as someone else so eloquently put earlier on, in this thread. Either way, it's not that big of a deal.

Finally, I'll check out your program there. It sounds just like what I'm lookin for.

Later,

Turboface

Is it a big deal if someone hits me up unsolicited in ICQ to try to do business? No, not really... but generally, if they want me as a customer, I like the courtesy of being emailed and asked for my ICQ, that sort of thing. I guess it isn't really spam, just that there is a nicer way to do it.

I don't know if you know of Sexhound.net - They we running a spamalicious campaign a few years ago, to contact all the webmasters of the bigger TGPs. That wound up blowing up in their faces. They we're banned all over the place.
