Who here thinks pre-checked cross sales are shady?
I've noticed a few big sponsors doing it. What do ya'll think?

shady - not illegal but shady. especially when the text is size=1 and the cross-sale site doesn't even have a URL to go with it and is priced at 39.99 or above.

would you consider a sponsor who credit card description is ATM CASCADE or a similar ATM-type descriptor and charges in $40.00 increments for their price points shady?

Shady as fuck!
This happened to me 3 months ago. Bought a program online and 3 months later I look at my cc statement to find I was being charged $14.95 per month for some retail discount membership. I ended up getting a refund on 2 months but took a loss for $14.95 on the 3rd. I was just happy to get most of my money back.

I'm not gonna name names. Just go to the 10 biggest programs you know and click the join button. Enter a user and pass and go to the credit card page, takes 2 secs to see who is doing it.

shady, yeah...
The worst cases are sites that allow people to signup for $1 (or even free), but then pre-check cross sale them at $39.95 or something like that. For me that gets to be just about over the line. I also have an issue with programs that pay say $25 per signup to an affiliate, and then have a pre-checked cross sale for an amount higher than what the affiliate gets paid. Essentially, the program sets itself up to profit twice and pay once. All of this goes back to the ongoing, long running, almost endless of programs that promise to pay huge amounts of money per signup. They have to make the money somewhere to pay for it, don't they? |

I have no troubles with them personally as a consumer. I take care when I'm about to spend money, and frequently ignore or uncheck extra offers for other items or warranties or extended home support when I buy.
More annoying to me are forms when joining a messageboard/site where you have to carefully check to opt out of additional offers, AND UNcheck to opt out of other additional offers, lol. Imagine if paysites had 1 cross sale that said "Uncheck here now to not join this site" and a 2nd cross sale that said "Check here now to join this site". Chaos. The rules in place are sufficient. Also annoying is shopping for batteries and placing them on the counter with cash in hand and getting offered a cellular phone, long distance phone service, store credit card application, and being asked for my name and address.

I often wonder how programs can manage to do that stuff and still stay within chargeback limits. |
