Anyone into car stereos?

Back a few years ago, I used to have a great system in my car. Then i wrecked it and got my dads car and sold the stereo equipement.

But i miss having it in my car and decided to bring it back. Anyway, teh car comes with a bose system that has a really weak open air sub. Im going to replace the sub and the amp. I already got the amp and the cleansweep attachment from JL, but not sure which sub to get.

If you love(d) car stereo equipement, check this out. I found a guy that had a brand new Rockford Punch 500a2... the old school one! I am SO stoked to get this, imo, best amp ever made.

Any suggestions on a sub? I like the sounds of 12" and was thinking of either a JL 12w7 or a JL 12w6v2 (jlaudio.com). My friend who is in the car stereo biz in PA said Kicker makes a decent sub, but I've always been a fan of JL

Prior, I had a punch 250 on a 12" JL w0 in a ported box. Sounded great for mid entry level equipement.

I operated a top car audio shop for 6 years, do not get the kicker. JL is nice but there are so many others. You really need to know what you want and what you want to spend, and be sure to match the amp and sub up perfectly.

If the amp does 500RMS @ 2OHM Mono, get a DVC sub that is no less than 200RMS@4OHM per coil. No more than 300RMS@4OHM per coil. These are just examples, it really depends on the power of the amp, the number of subs/coils you want to run, and of course the sound you are trying to achieve.

I used to have an install shop too this was back in late 80's early 90's when it was just really getting started. Was just a small thing I did on the side. I really like JL audio though. Always did well for me. Wife and kids now, so no boom boom car audio anymore.

Thanks for info. Its not an easy decision now because ive been out of the scene for over 4 years. i used to know exactly what I wanted and what was best, but really no clue anymore.

Ive gone to a few places and all they recommend is the most expensive because they get commission. Im going to do some hunting tomorrow and see what I like. Im really leaning towards JL because i like them, and wiht 1 12" sub.

If you purchase from a specialty car audio shop, look for trophies in both SPL and SQ classes. If they seem like they do well in the dbDrag, IASCA, MECA circuits, then they will most likely answer your questions with honesty and experience.

I personally only do rockford. I used to swear by cerwin vega but they seam to blow really easy. They don't distort or anything, just blow suddenly and the sub locks up.

There's a few companys that make free air subs that'll go right into the hole if you wanna keep a stock look.

RF used to make great amps.. they went to shit.... the old RF amp you got is great! JL is great also.. they still rock it.. make sure you get the right W model to match the amp (based on bridging ohm etc).. look into getting a one farad cap also and a nice crossover to balance your stocks with the subs

I used to have a nice setup in my 67 impala convertible before it got stolen

i had JL 12" running alpine v12 amps with clarion pro series flip deck and custom fiberglass kick panels running polk audio components... and dynamatted the entire car... i had the cleanest sound..

Yeah, im stoked i got that amp, it was a HARD find.

Im not really looking to go in as much as I used to. Just something to give it an added "punch." I was huge into car audio years ago and spent WAY to much, but i guess its worth it now to be partially deaf.

I always got complemented on my system because i had great all around sound, not just bass. I put a lot of money into other components and highs so the whole system sounded great.
