Virus from Hell. I need expert help...

Ok so my Symantec system is messed up. I have a crazy virus messing with my computer so I want to run a scan. It won't let me. then I try to do my live updates for best protection and when I click to update, it comes back with an error that basically says

The live update file is corrupt and can't update.

So, my anti-virus protection couldn't protect itself from a virus?

doomed. so I can't scan now for a virus nor can I update to protect from more viruses?? this is fun, not

Spunky pretty much called it.

You can try booting to safe mode with networking, which is one of the boot options. Run your update virus scan from here for a new definition and then try running the virus scan.

First turn off system restore, scanners can not repair them files... Once you have turned that off then you can run your scan in safe mode and clean up your system...

Good luck!

The following assumes you're running Windows 2000 or XP, any service pack:

Boot normally -- no Safe Mode. Hit CTRL-ALT-ESC. In the Task Manager window click the Processes tab. I need to know what's on that list. You can't cut and paste the list like text so you'll have to type them manually into Notepad and save them. Do that, send the list to me (use the address below), and we'll see what bit you and go from there.

I forgot to mention, all I need are the names in the "Image Name" column, in the same order they're in Task Manager. Don't bother with the other columns.

Smokeys suggestion is

#1 remove all antivirus programs / protection

restart twice

#2 go to www.antivirus.com

#3 run the free online scan , clean and remove any problems it finds , then restart

#4 dont use anti-virus software , its all bloated and 99% useless as new virus' wont be caught only old known virii. If you keep your computer up to date , and use the online www.antivirus.com tool you will be a shitload better off.

You need Nod32, it's the best virus program out there. I've tried Norton and Symantic, but I've had viruses get around their protection. I haven't had a single problem yet with Nod32. It's nice because you'll notice that on a near DAILY basis, they update their definitions, you can't be on top of things more than that
