Virus from Hell. I need expert help...

Ok so my Symantec system is messed up. I have a crazy virus messing with my computer so I want to run a scan. It won't let me. then I try to do my live updates for best protection and when I click to update, it comes back with an error that basically says

The live update file is corrupt and can't update.

So, my anti-virus protection couldn't protect itself from a virus? :1orglaugh :Oh crap

doomed. so I can't scan now for a virus nor can I update to protect from more viruses?? this is fun, not

Spunky 03-06-2007 06:43 PM

Have you tried running it in safe mode?

potter 03-06-2007 06:43 PM

install a better OS

WarChild 03-06-2007 06:45 PM

Spunky pretty much called it.

You can try booting to safe mode with networking, which is one of the boot options. Run your update virus scan from here for a new definition and then try running the virus scan.

gimilin 03-06-2007 06:49 PM

enter safe mode and then use your anti-virus software.
Good luck man.

naitirps 03-06-2007 06:52 PM

try http://housecall.antivirus.com/ - if fixed, uninstall any symantec products and use microsoft live one care ;-)

ok safe mode. got it, going to try that now! thanks!

Jon Clark - BANNED FOR LIFE 03-06-2007 06:59 PM

First turn off system restore, scanners can not repair them files... Once you have turned that off then you can run your scan in safe mode and clean up your system...

Good luck!

Love Sex 03-06-2007 07:03 PM

new viruses are able to take over antivirus software.

The following assumes you're running Windows 2000 or XP, any service pack:

Boot normally -- no Safe Mode. Hit CTRL-ALT-ESC. In the Task Manager window click the Processes tab. I need to know what's on that list. You can't cut and paste the list like text so you'll have to type them manually into Notepad and save them. Do that, send the list to me (use the address below), and we'll see what bit you and go from there.

I forgot to mention, all I need are the names in the "Image Name" column, in the same order they're in Task Manager. Don't bother with the other columns.

LMAO! I have been through so many 'virus protectors' I think they are all viruses in disguise :disgust

When Racer is on the case, you know you are in good hands. :2 cents:

CC 03-07-2007 12:44 AM

Not that it helps you now, but I like AVG for virus protection.

u-Bob 03-07-2007 10:16 AM

do it the easy (and right) way: format and reinstall...

pornguy 03-07-2007 10:19 AM

go to housecall.trendmicro.com and run the online scan.

It is free, and amazing.

loverboy 03-07-2007 10:21 AM

there much better anti-virus programs available than Symantec

try AVG 2 cents

Smokeys suggestion is

#1 remove all antivirus programs / protection

restart twice

#2 go to www.antivirus.com

#3 run the free online scan , clean and remove any problems it finds , then restart

#4 dont use anti-virus software , its all bloated and 99% useless as new virus' wont be caught only old known virii. If you keep your computer up to date , and use the online www.antivirus.com tool you will be a shitload better off.

Slick 03-07-2007 11:08 AM

You need Nod32, it's the best virus program out there. I've tried Norton and Symantic, but I've had viruses get around their protection. I haven't had a single problem yet with Nod32. It's nice because you'll notice that on a near DAILY basis, they update their definitions, you can't be on top of things more than that :)
