They have to approve it first usually and they don't work weekends. I've had it take anywhere from a few hours to 3 -4 working days.

When I first signed up on adwords, it took over a week to get my ad to appear (I created the ad on a friday or something). They might have changed this now but it never said why my ad wasn't running. So after about 3 days I changed the ad thinking something was wrong with the wording. I'm guessing that extended the wait even longer. Until you get an account manager (spending a lot) their customer service is non existent.

well, I usually get it approved the same day unless they have a huge backlog
but they won't work on weekends.
