I was wondering how to value an established pay site.

I've heard various yardsticks : the usual ones that its worth 6 months earning or 12 months.

Where did these rules of thumbs come from and are they valid criteria.

What criteria should one establish when looking at a pay site and how should one value them?

monthly income x however long you are comfortable taking to recoup your investment..
Also because a lot of the paysites success depends on the operator it's up to the buyer to be able to recognise what *THEY* can do with it and value it accordingly

normally that is around 6 months. I would hazard a guess thats because anything longer in an industry evolving so rapidly might not be wise.. a paysite isn't a mutual fund. niches get worn out.. technologies become obsolete.. right wing psycho's legislate aginst pornography...

yeah if you're selling and want to make some money and don't mind being an ass, sell to someone looking to get into porn.. I've seen sites go for 10 times what they're worth taking advantage of guys with some cash looking to get in... personally I couldn't do it though.. too dishonest.. but you could probably bump it up 10- 20% more than what it's worth though and give them plenty of operational advice in return..

i'm looking at buying.

Actually i'm looking at developing a fresh pay site and thought it would be nice to have some income while the new site is building a base.... it's always nice to have money coming in...

so ... in an established site a good domain name and yahoo position are essentially irrelevent? that doesn't seem to make sense on the face of it...

in this situation, there's bought content but hardly anything unique..

most ain't worth much. Leased not owned content in them is worthless and if the guy sells paysite and then gets all the affiliates to change to his new program you be fucked. Only thing you're buying the is hope the existing clients won't cancel their recurring memberships and they all do cancel in a couple of months no matter what the seller says about how long they stay.

I'd say the value is probally 2 months revenuw minus expensis which would make it about a 1/2 months gross revenue or less.

Much much better to buy a free site that owns licence to their content and has real trafic going through it. Then you OWN everything and can just slap up any old paysite made from scratch and make bank off it.

Traffic = money. Period.
