3rd party software to replace...

the windows defragmenter? Anyone know of anything? (for Win2K Pro) I like to defrag the drives every night, but the built in MS shit is too damn slow and always seems to cause system issues after it's done......

now.... is there any way to fix and/or remove a bad HD sector? I got a drive here that's only a few months old, and has one bad sector.

We use diskkeeper as well, does a good job, just decided to use one or the other, if you use diskkeeper then defrag with the windows tool you'll start freaking the fat or ntfs tables...one or the other. Scandisk should mark your bad sector, you can't really get rid of it, even if you fdisk it'll probably be found again, I'd get a replacement drive if it's only a few months old.

depends on the hard drive I have a western digital that comes with a disk to hide the bad sector. Many hard drives actually have more space then they advertise so that when a bad sector shows up during a low level format they just get one of the extra sectors to replace it. Anyway just check to see if there is a utility disk that cam with the harddrive

Norton will write a little fake file over the bad sector so you don't end up accidentally writing something to it. I am sure other utils can do the same.
