1) Cogent and anyone who uses them sucks major ass.

2) I did a Whois on gfx-hosting.com, and they reside in Buenos Aires.

They "state" they have 3 OC-3's and 2 DS-3's from 4 different providers (2 of them in Chap. 11).

If they buy that much bandwidth as they say they do (500+Mbps), then they can discount to the end user and/or oversubscribe.

Make sure they have all those circuits residing in one data center, and that they are running BGP, multi gateway router, switch redundancy.

Just remember, cheapest isn't always best

Congent - a provider that dumps bandwith prices to the lowest possible minimum and suckers ISPs into paying crazy money for the fibre layout. Once the fiber is lit, they offer unbelievably unreliable service and those people, thinking they were getting a good deal, get fucked in the end. Since the company just spent insane money on the fibre, they have nothing better to do but resell bandwith at the menitoned above low ass prices and hiding the fact that it's provided by Congent due to the fact that the public is aware that the dark cloud is not too far.

Dude, don't mind the Cogent haters. A lot of people use it with no problem. It's like buying a Honda (Cogent) instead of the Mercedes (Verio). A Benz is a nice safe & reliable car that costs a lot of money. The Honda is cheaper & not as safe but costs less than half the Benz and still gets you there almost just as fast.

Its not 0.15 Cents per Gigabyte... I will explain.

The offer a 10Mbps CAPPED line for $500/per Month (Server not included).

This means that if you use all 10 Mbps at PEAK, you'll average about 5Mbps. (This is the amount THEY have to pay for).

So, if your lucky and sustain a 5Mbit bitrate you'll do about 1,700 gigs per month. This means your paying 30 cents per gig + server rental fees. How much is the server rental? Set-up fees? Colo Fees? I don't see any of this on their page. (i.e. What's the ACTUAL cost per month of this package?)

I know almost any hosting company out there can and will match this deal... It's nothing special once you read between the lines.

cogent sells 100mbit feeds for $1k/month.

i've yet to have many problems with them, i think a lot of hearsay is passed along about them just because they're cheap. i'm looking at getting one of the 100mbit deals myself, because it's fast and reliable enough for me and that's an insane price not to take advantage of it.

listen to everyone say cogent sucks all you want, but plenty of people use them and they have a lot of fiber lit around the US. love it or hate it, they've got tier-1 capacity.

i'm sure people can argue about verio's instability as well, we had plenty of problems with them back in the day. half the posts on this board are just people playing the telephone game or passing on what their biased host told them (come with us, we don't use that cogent crap...)

i use them currently and i can tell you it's been just great for the price.

more you spend = more reliable and robust it will be. just be wary of markup and overhead costs from the providers you buy from, that is the only thing that will wreck that rule.

Simple:

If you don't want to pay alot and you only have TGP galleries or CJ sites that burn alot of bandwidth but don't need a perfect connection all the time, use them.

If you want quality and high tech connectivity, use someone else.
