I might consider this for a car upgrade...

So, Im a GM man - my father worked at GM and I've always driven GM cars. In the past it sucked ass because GM didnt make any decent product, AT ALL. Now, things are a little different.. and there are actually some decent choices.

I currently drive one of these:

It's not bad, it has balls - 240hp / 240lb-ft toruqe and a 6-spd manual, loaded leather, etc, etc.. It's a pretty nice car. But Im in a position to make a serious upgrade.

Now, Pontiac just released this car at the autoshow, wont be available Until Jan '08:

Pontiac G8

Not a huge fan of the hood scoops - I somehow dont think they'll be on EVERY production model, but probably on the high end GTP/GXP version. Now, the attraction is the 362hp 6.0L V8 AND RWD But, it seems there are no plans for a manual transmission.

My other option is to go big, I buy one of these used for $10-$12k to kick around in the winter:

And I get one of these babies to drive 8 months of the year (but not in yellow):

ahh.. decisions decisions..

Gotta love how it takes them 6 liters of displacement to make only 360 hp.

natural air flow . . . makes a huge diff . . my vette gets 350 hp out of 5.7 litters but you can fuck with them and get about 800 . . they are gonna produce the blue devil, 7 liters with dual super chargers . . 700 hp . . that should be plenty . .

Gotta love how mechanically complicated and heavy a massive multi-valve overhead cam system is...

This is a common argument, it seems that it is somehow "unsophisticated" to use a simple, light, high-displacement engine.

The lowly 'pushrod' engines (a term that the valve-o-philes love to use to 'demean' OHV engines) built by GM - especially the jewel - the 7.0L 505hp engine in the Z06 - are the most powerful and technically advanced 'pushrod' engines ever mass produced. And, seeing as the Z06 is one of the lightest and fastest production cars on the planet - there seems to be little argument for a needlessly complicated low-displacement whiz-bang of an engine.

But, to each their own - some people like non-turbocharged torque. I happen to be one of those people. Sure, a 2.0L engine in an S2000 gets 120HP per litre because it revs to 9500rpm - but I dont drive on a racetrack every day, I drive on city streets and government highways.

how is it as a daily driver as far as comfort is concerned?

Also - how big is the trunk? I have a cottage that's about 300 miles away so I would be making that trip often..

right with ya there . . I so love going 80 with 2K on the tach I so love driving around town and never breaking 1.5K on the tach if i chose too . . and that's with the 5.7 . . crap my vette doesn't even really get excited til about 120 mph . .

I do have the 3:15 rear end . . the c6 is stock with the 2.50 rear end . . gonna drive the c6 someday soon . . see how much fun it is in person . . not gonna get the z06 'cause I drive in heavy traffic all the time . .

Ya man, Im telling you - GM cars dont suck anymore. It's hard to believe, I know - I lived through all the crappy years (ie the 1990s), I've driven the piece of shit cars (i've had a sunfure, a cavalier, a grand am a grand prix, I even still have a 1985 Fiero GT in peices..in my parents Driveway). I am still impressed with the quality of my G6, especially the interior. And this new G8 looks pretty sick (praying for a manual tranny though!!!)

my vette is a GREAT daily driver . .. very, very, very comfortable . . and any issues with noise are addressed with the new vettes . . the hatch back is huge . . plenty of room . . go check one out . . and don't forget the GTO and the caddy CTSV both have the vette motor in them with a bit more room. BTW I average about 24 MPG

Meh - My girlfriend does the benz thing, she currently has an '06 SLK280, had a CLK before and will probably get an ML next. Personally I dont like the Mercerdes driving experience (especially for the price...) and you can't get a manual tranny in a benz.

If I wanted a car to race with, I would get a Honda S2000. I lived with one for a couple weeks when my gf's brother was away - you can't live with them everyday - they're noisy and uncomfortable. BUT you can show up at a race track and have the time of your life.

For pure driving experience and daily drivability, BMW is the top of my list, but It's not a 'dream' car for me.. a corvette Z06 is. Not to mention the cost, I save around 30 - 40% because of GM family pricing and incentives. It would be insane of me not drive a new GM car every 3-4 years.

So I dont feel like Im missing out on anything really.
