Laptop Over Heating

My laptop is gettin so hot it is shutting off on me, and I'm not running a lot programs or high power programs.

Any idea why and how I can fix this?

Also - I seen a few news reports about laptop catching on fire. Could this happen to me? I currently don't have the battery in to see if it helps any, i just have it plugged in.

It's not the battery. Get a can of compressed air (dustoff, for example) and spray it into the side vents and watch the dust come out.

It's digusting--you'll see.

Also, never use the laptop on the top of a bed (blankets block the airflow), never on top of a couch or chair (same reason), or anything soft like that. Even your lap will block airflow.

If you must use it on your lap, spread your legs and rest each side of the laptop on your legs (basically, the laptop should have the entire bottom not blocked).

You might look at getting a laptop cooling pad.

I put two little pads at the back corners of mine to raise it a little. Helps, but I've never had problems.

You hit the nail on the head. Aside from this, you may want to check that the fans are actually running, both for your CPU and video card.

Get some over sized sick on rubber feet. Put then on the bottom of the laptop and raze it up 1/2 inch for better cooling.

Mine was doing this recently so I took off the cpu cover, cleaned out the air vents and heatsink, added some new thermal glue between the cpu and heatsink, and it's running great now.

tell me its NOT a sony laptop? if so, same thing happened to me 100 times before i figured out the problem.

the problem is the cooling fan from the processor gets clogged with dust, dirt, baby seals, etc. so you have to take the whole piece apart, clean it out, and your good for a few weeks and repeat.

In most cases this phenomenon occurs due to accumulation of dirt in the computer's CPU cooling system.
if you dont have a sony, could be the same thing. just google the make/model and "over heat" and you should find some answers
