Picked up a new HDV PANASONIC CAMERA !!!

Woo hoo .. Picked up the new HDV HVX200 P2 camera this morning ... Been playing with it for the last hour .. Pretty neat so far .. I like the extended user menu for gamma's and skin details .. very sweet

ANyone have any experience with this camera .. My goal in the next few days is to figure out my workflow and be sure that this baby will work with my current edit suite set up ... Matrox RTX100 Extreme.
(ps. We have a Dual G5 on order as well as a MATROX RTX.2 on back order)

Since we are talking HD cameras... I am an amateur shooting my own content. I want to buy a HD camera in the next few months. I have a budget of about $1500 to $2500. Any ideas which camera would fit my needs?

Thanks!

HI Angeliquexxx ... Don't know if you remember me but I was the content manager at wildrose back in 2001 ..
Anyhow .. I think that The Canon HD10 (I could be wrong about the series number) would work fine for what your doing ... I think it sits around $1000 CAD

Hi Vid! *Wave* You need to send me or post a photo of you so I can remember who you are, cause I am sure your name back in 2001 wasn't VidViscious... haha

Thanks for the tip for the camera I will look it up! I was thinking the Sony AU1 or something (might be wrong with the model number). Any feedback on that one?

Thanks!

That's a nice camera, Vid! I haven't tried any P2 card technology yet. I film mostly with a Sony HDV camera nowadays. So the 8 Gb P2 card records only sixteen minutes of footage to a single P2 card and does not record simultaneously to the mini-DV tape, right? How does the P2 card hook up to your computer to capture or transfer the footage to the hard drive? And lastly, for curiosity, is this P2 card technology available only in new HD cameras specially made with it built in or can it be added on to an existing HDV camera that does not have it built in?

Hi Jim ..

Yah the cam can take two p2 cards .. and yah not much capture spacce for a 1500$ card ..How ever the cam also has SDD via USB 2.0 so you can record to an HDD, Like the Firestore .. way cheaper then the P2 card.

Errr ...Tony404 .. Keep in mind one very simple way to determine an HD from an HDV .. an HD camera takes HD tapes only! .. and HDV takes MiniDV tapes to record HD .. Big difference .. also I don't know of any HD camera for under 60 000$ ... Then there is HDPro, Only panasonic has rights to that format .. again not HD tape but HDPro Tape. Fuck Barry I should write a book ... LOL

The Canon X1A that I am more interested in doesn't have an SDD in so now seperate HDD record, however the X1G (one Level up from the X1A) does have SDD so you can hook up HDD record to it .. However I think the price difference from the X1A to the X1G is about $2300 more.

NOw to get back to your Sony cams .. the pana sits at the same price point even a little lower then the Z1U. I've seen the Pana at 5300$. It's a little smaller then the Z1U .. and has some pretty cool settings .. for example (and this is the first time I see this setting) you can change the direction of your Iris Toggle switch .. Meaning you can have it Roll upwards to open the iris or downwards to open the iris ... It might not make or break my decision .. but since I'm a Sony shooter I'm used to up to open iris.

These are just a few of the settings I've come accross .. more to come

Maybe you should do more research before writing your book. The hvx200 doesnt record hd on minidv tape it only records sd on tape.if you want to shoot hd you have to use their cards or direct to disk. So your mistaken. The hvx200 is the closest you can get in format to a 60k camera. Barry could teach you a thing or two lol

Umm I'm holding the camera in my hands .. I also have over 17 years experience in the broadcast industry .. starting as a camera technician on Betacam oxide, Betacam Sp and Digi Beta ... I was one of the first 10 cameramen trained by Sony canada on the 900ws 24 P (the second true HD camera, the 700 being the first) ... I trained the DP on the 900 for Battle Star Galatica when they wanted to switch over to HD from film ...

LOL you don't take to critizim too well .. do you

Damn! P2 is the way to go...now all I have to do is buy two new cameras and at least (4) 8Gb P2 cards.

I saw B&H has some HVX200 camera kits with 8Gb cards at around $8k each. I guess I need to start planning for my next investment...

the panny is the shit its the only camera anywhere near its price range that shoots true hidef (not HDV) and tony is right it doesnt record any HD or HDV to tape...only to disk or to the P2 sticks

on the other hand with TRUE over/undercranking, true 24P and true HD you cant touch anything even close to it till you get in the 60K range

The true HD is a dream to edit compared to HDV which has to be converted to an intermediate format for frame accurate editing.

THis seems to cause a delema .. Shooting Gonzo I really don't want the fire wire cable in the way .. Having 4 P2 8 gigs cards is some what very expensive .. i'm wondering something though and haven't been able to find out anything on the web as of yet. If the camera is set to record 1080 60i or even 30 i .. But record on Minidv tape ... Will my Dv workflow still work? And how different will the image be .. ENd product is web mind you .. it might be easier for my clients and for my workflow to just record in Dv if that's the case.

this can be a option but not cheap:
FS-4Pro http://www.videoguys.com/FireStore.html
or you can look up and read here, lots of users of your camera here:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=55
that part is dedicated your to your cam and everyone is very nice.
Some say the downconverted stuff on it looks great.

Looking like another reason HDV really IS a good format for web work.

I have this camera and I LOVE it. No HD on tape but if you have a firestore then you don't need tape. No BS with dropped frames during capturing etc. I do most web shoots still on DV tho.

I have shot some stuff in DVCPro HD and OMG.. anyone even considering a Canon should really play with this puppy first. This camera blows all the pro consumer Sony's out of the water no doubt.

I made a thread when I was about to purchase this camera. Maybe Tony remembers?.. He seems to have a real interest in these things as well.

The DVX-100 is a great camera also. Which one do you have Tony the a or b?

Yes Barry Green ,he wrote the bible for the dvx100/100a , he also wrote one for your camera on the panny site. Here they are giving new buyers a free 8 gig card and barrys book .
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp...odel=AG-HVX200
Panny is real good on their promos ,with mine I got barrys book, magic bullet, a 9hr battery and 10 of their master minidv tapes. Little did I know the reason was they were coming out with the new one

Hey Seb ...

I've used the DVx100 for my Pornstar academey shoots .. Loved the color rendition of this pana ...

Have you shot in Mindv with the Hvx? Can you still use a DV naitive Edit suite ?

My client also has FCP Dual G5 sitting in a box in his office. I might be able ot convince him to let me use it .. that would defentlity save the day.

I thought about just shooting on HDPro tape stock, only thing is your looking at close to 50$ for a 40 min tape ... it can get pretty pricey

Your thoughts please ...

They can beat you all they want, when you're right you're right. Simple as that.

My buddy bought the A also, and a month later the B came out. He was ready to kick himself in the nuts over and over. Now that I let him play with the HVX he is doing everything he can in his power to get himself one.

I used to shoot with a Canon XL1s and loved it at the time, then I shot with my buddy's dvx and became a Panny guy, then when the HVX came out I just had to have one..

Let me know if you guys are ever in Vegas Tony, maybe we can shoot some BBW's together..

The true HD is a dream to edit compared to HDV which has to be converted to an intermediate format for frame accurate editing.[/QUOTE]

Mike, that Panasonic is a great camera, and the ability to shoot true HD to the P2 cards is nice, but for porn purposes it's way overkill for almost every conceivable purpose or client. Most of us are compressing this footage to wmv or quicktime anyway for the end user, so no one is going to notice the difference, put their cock away and say, "hey, I really appreciate that 4:2:2 colorspace!"

And according to the article the Panny does shoot hdv (but not HD) to mini-DV tape.

By the way, editing HDV footage using an intermediate format like I do with Premiere Pro 1.5.1 and the Aspect HD plugin is actually quite easy compared to uncompressed HD. It captures and edits almost exactly like DV. The only pain in the ass is the fact that in my case I have to deinterlace every clip (shot with the FX-1) which takes a long time and then the rendering out to the finished format(s) like wmv or mov takes FOREVER compared to DV! Instead of 25 minutes to 35 minutes to output a 35 minute scene to say, a 640 x 480 wmv at 1500 Kb bitrate, a 1440 x 1080 16x9 wmv at 4300 Kb bitrate, now takes up to 10 hours to encode if you add a watermark to it even with my dual core pc!
