:mad Windows Explorer Fucking Sucks

Have any of you drag-n-dropped a bunch of files from one directory to another to find that they went in the directory BELOW or ABOVE the one you wanted to put them in? Even when you are ABSOLUTELY sure that you dropped them on the right directory. This happens to me ALL the fucking time! I am positive that Windows Explorer just doesn't know where your mouse is when you release the button. The only sure fire way to make sure it works properly is to NOT use drag-n-drop, but to copy them, then click the new dir, then paste them. Drag-n-Drop licks balls!!! I am SOOOOO MAD!!!! Man, doesn't it bite when you are moving directories full of images, and then find you dropped them in the wrong dir, and then have all these intermixed files. FUCK!

(ok, I'm done my ranting...)

Been using it ever since it came out and never had the problem. Maybe you have been looking at the monitor to long or need glasses.

No, this has happened too many times. I can stare at the dir listing forever, and you can plainly see which one is selected. Then you view the results, and they aren't as expected.

I'm running WinME, maybe that's the problem...

Could be a possibility. My computer came with ME. I used it for a few months but dumped it as I encountered a few to many problems and could not seem to work out the bugs. I tried Windows 2000 Pro but I did not like it either (not because of problems), so I went back to Windows 98 2nd Edition. I have most of the bugs in it worked out so seldom get the dreaded "Blue Screen" crash and always recover from it when I do.

I have learned to use software that helps to maintain your system, on a weekly basis, this seems to eliminate some of the problems.

I have ME & I don't have any problems with it.

Try dragging & dropping the files while not drunk &/or stoned...you'll be less vision impaired that way

When you're dragging and dropping files over other files with the same name, Undo is not available. Obviously, if I wasn't overwriting files, then I use undo. Duh!

I think it's retarded that it can drop files into the wrong directory, even when it's plain as day which directory is highlighted. I even had it once drop the files in a subdir of the directory I want to drop them in, and the subdir was not visible! (i.e. it was not expanded to show the subdirs of the dir I was dropping them into). I couldn't believe it.

I know most people don't use drag n drop with tons of files, and even I don't do it that often. But when I need to do it about 20 times in a row, and I notice 5 mistakes - there is something wrong. And it's not like I'm moving so fast I can't see what's going on...

In any case, I will never trust this feature again, and if this ever happens to you (i.e. the files aren't where they are expected), then don't assume it was a mistake on your part.

You know what? WinME has major problems when handling lots of files. Anyone who has ever deleted a bunch of files at once, or even emptied their recycling bin when it's 500 megs in size, knows this. Because explorer slows to a crawl after this - even to just rename a file! Waits of 20 seconds or more is not uncommon (after a major file deletion took place).

You need to reboot the machine before this problem is fixed. It just seems to be a database memory management problem to me. I know that WinXP does not have this problem, I guess I will have to upgrade to avoid it.

Anyway, maybe this is why this shit has been happening. Because if the computer is slow to respond, maybe it's not showing me the dir I want to see when I let go of the mouse button, or maybe it's so delayed, that when it checks for the mouse position, the mouse has moved (since a second or two AFTER the release of the button), and assumes that THAT location is where I released the button (and not the location of where I actually did), and thus drops the files in the wrong spot. This would only happen with a ton of files.

I just fucking solved the problem! I am confident enough that this is the reason, you guys should be able to try this, and replicate the problem. To avoid getting bitten by it, make sure the mouse doesn't move AT ALL after you release the button, until windows explorer actually is done moving/copying all the files.

Another test to prove that such a (fucking) ridiculous thing can happen is this: Double click the mouse, but move it as you are doing it. You will click on 2 seperate folders/files, but windows recognizes the double click, and assumes you double clicked on the second file/folder you clicked on, and then open it...

Also, another glitch - when you mass delete (not recycling bin) a bunch of files with SHIFT+DELETE, and if the analysis takes longer than it does for you to press these keys, then when windows deletes the files, you are no longer holding SHIFT, so it assumes you only pressed DELETE - they will all go into the recycling, even though that's not what you asked.

At least I am now glad I know what causes this fucking thing...

People... no one who uses a computer does not know that UNDO exists... No one. This is an insult to my intelligence. However, it is really an insult to your intelligence, since you do not realize that I would have already thought about using UNDO, and I use it when I can. BUT, you CANNOT UNDO an mass overwrite of files when they have the same name. The problem is, is that all the files have the same name (01.jpg, 02.jpg, etc), and are in each their own directory, and I meant to overwrite them. Instead, they overwrote a directory of files I had JUST created... and you can imagine how MAD that makes me!

In any case, I solved the problem - read the post before this one.

Ha ha, that's quite all right. When posted seemlingly stupid threads as this one, I am bound to get hit with some newbie bombs. It was expected. But, hopefully people now realize this is a serious problem with explorer. I wonder if the same thing can happen in WinXP?

Then why did you waste time repling to it?

Funny that people assume it's a newbie question, and think that I really did drop it in the wrong dir (I didn't), and that I don't know about undo (I do), then reply with these assumptions...

Even funnier that it is a serious glitch in WinME that could cause people major problems... now the world knows about it.

Whether there is a bug or not, drag and drop is too risky if you are worried about overwriting your shit.

Best bet is always use the keyboard shortcuts: select all the files, copy or cut, select the destination directory and paste.

No way you can fuck up this way.

I do this some times and then some times I just say fuck it..... And leave every thing as is. Then I can tell the boss I tried but this computer is shit, I need a new one.

Yup, exactly! That's what I started doing before I realized how this bug works. Even if you are aware of the bug, it can still bite. The only way to be 100% sure is with the keyboard...

You are correct about the delay when dealing with a large number of files, and you are correct about rebooting after dealing with a large number of files. I never experienced the problem you had, I guess, because I must not have attempted multiple transfers.
