Does ASACP still support .xxx ?

posted on 17th May 2004 on the old ICANN forum

http://forum.icann.org/lists/stld-rfp-xxx/msg00061.html

I don't want to add unneccessarily fuel to the fire, but that old post from ASACP is hardly a secret... and I wonder if they today - still - oficially support .xxx. Anyone knows?

full post quoted below

Quote:
ASACP (asacp.org) is the organization that helps the adult site industry
make a difference in the battle against child pornography. ASACP recognizes
sexual child abuse as a heinous crime committed against children. As a major
deterrent to such abuse, ASACP was formed in 1996 and is dedicated to
eliminating child pornography from the Internet. ASACP also provides a
self-regulatory vehicle for its membership through a Code of Ethics that
promotes the protection of children through responsible, professional
business practices. Over 4,700 adult sites have joined our cause in raising
awareness about this subject.

ASACP investigates and assists the F.B.I. and the National Center for
Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) in enforcing anti-child pornography
laws against thousands of child pornography sites. To date, ASACP has
received and reviewed over 100,000 reports of suspect child pornography, of
which more than 25,000 valid child pornography sites have been reported to
the F.B.I and NCMEC.

ASACP has been in negotiations with the International Foundation for Online
Responsibility (IFFOR) and ICM for it to serve as a hotline for reviewing
reports of suspected child pornography and to carry out the secondary
monitoring of .xxx sites for child pornography.

I applaud IFFOR and ICM Registry's initiative to integrate tools and
technology of finding and reporting child pornography websites into their
proposed registry application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers (ICANN).

I also support the online adult industry developing their own credible
business practices in conjunction with other impacted stakeholders and
support the IFFOR initiative to create a line of communication between the
adult industry and the global community.

Sincerely,

Joan Irvine
Executive Director
ASACP

While I can't speak for the Association, I believe the answer is "no"

That was an old proposal that I believe was later rejected

I really hope Stephen's correct. Homegrown is a proud member of ASACP, but we definitely aren't supporters of .xxx

I can't wait till that debate is over. Too much finger pointing and paranoia going on lately.

the answer at the time was very fucking vague , if memory serves me right Joan said she was speaking personally even though she put her title on it and for her to retract it the board would have to tell her. never happened.
There are things being set in motion, that will drag all the ghouls into the light, I look forward to that day.

Update:

http://forum.icann.org/lists/xxx-icm.../msg01592.html

Quote:
Our organization has officially been neutral on the question of whether or
not ICANN should approve ICM's proposal for a .xxx top-level domain, since
we consider either endorsement or opposition to be outside of our mission.
However, because ASACP has organized the child protection efforts of the
online adult entertainment industry for more than a decade, many of our
Sponsors, Members and associates in the industry have asked us to assess the
provisions of the proposal which specifically address child protection
issues.

(........)

SUMMARY

No doubt, considerations unrelated to child protection will influence your
decision about whether to approve the proposed .xxx TLD. However, ASACP's
position is that the existence of a .xxx TLD will not enhance the industry's
ongoing voluntary efforts to protect children.

ASACP therefore recommends that ICANN avoid taking any action based upon or
influenced by the incorrect assumption that a .xxx TLD would further help to
protect children online.

Sincerely,

Joan E. Irvine

Executive Director
