If i went to a show, what benifits would I get?

hey i dont think im going to go a show this year , as im not making enough money to jusitfy me spening $800 to go to the usa, but Ive been told that going to them really helps you.
Im wondering what type of things you learn. because surely you go up to a stand and that stand want you to send traffic to them and bla bla bla
would you get the same information you get by just talking to a rep on icq?
or do they sit down with you, go through you and your sites and tell you how you can optimise them to make them beter? what type of things do you chat about?

so in truth at the moment I gather that a show is really just a real life icq conversation from a rep, or is there a lot more to it than just the usual, "hey buddy send me traffic, you will make a lot of cash using our program?

what type of things can you gain and what type of experice can you get?

<serious thread by the way>

Yes networking, but you really need to have something to work with. A service you do, or traffic to trade, etc etc. Its good to just get to know the people in the industry though, but are you 21 yet? Remember the drinking age in the U.S is 21. Amsterdam might be a good show for you, its 18 and over there right? Plus I imagine it would cost you less. Do that show as your first imo. Ill be there for sure this year.

you'll be able to say, "Hey, I know (insert name) from the show and he is a stand up guy!"

I don't think you'd benefit much from going to a show to be honest. You're an affiliate, just like me. You can find out what is up and coming from the boards and outside of that, I don't know what you'd really gain with the exception of meeting some people on the boards that you probably don't need anything from. It might be fun, but when it comes to advancing business, it's not really going to be too helpful to you.

I'd invest that money into your sites. Will give you a much bigger return.

yes, i think usa is a no no as thats quite a long way for my first show. I was thinking Amsterdam but thats next november and by then i will have started my term at university and i dont want to miss my first week by going to amsterdam.

what exactly does "networking" give you?
How will me knowing other industry people in person give me an upper hand in my promotion of websites?

you get to meet the people you talk to
that is the biggest thing

it is alot easier to get a deal done in person than over phone or icq
the more people you know - the better off you are

i got i think 96 biz cards in vegas
that is 96 more people that i have talked to face-2-face that i may do biz with in the end

They are popular because they are fun for a lot of people. A lot of the people that go have made friends with people over the years and it's a good place to meet up. Plus the location is usually pretty nice and the parties look to be fun. Although there is networking that takes place, I think a lot of people go because it's a good time.

I haven't been to an adult show so I couldn't comment on the promoting part. I'm an affiliate just like you, so I really don't have much that I'm looking for at a show. The boards give me a good feel for whats out there and an ICQ is usually all you need from a company to see what they can and can't do for you.

I'm not a big show guy. Been to mainstream ones and they are OK, but as an affiliate I don't really have much I need from anyone. I guess you have to ask yourself what exactly you'd want from a show. Is there something specific you are looking to accomplish such as find new sponsors, hosts, traffic, etc? If not, I think the money is better spent on some PBR and other crap for your sites.
