using ext hd for video archriving
Instead of burning dozens of dvds and ext hd are getting cheaper and cheaper. if you only used the ext hd to fill it up then put it in a closet what do you think the odds are of it failing when you needed it ?

If you have them in a climate-controlled environment, I don't see why they should fail when needed.
