iVillage says "NO!" to pop-ups... And so should you!

http://www.msnbc.com/news/787096.asp

"95 percent of its readers considered them to be the 'most frustrating feature of the Web.'"

Thanks for reading.

I'll never use popups again. I hate them so I wont make users put up with them. Plus, they take away from attention given to my site! What's the point?

I will, however, continue to use exit consoles. They are handy... Catch people as they choose to leave. So many ways that that can be useful.

I hate advertising at all..I think everything should be free on the Internet ;)

btw, isn't iVillage also going broke?

the problem with (most) mainstream companies is that they don't understand the art of the console...they don't know how to use it properly...they just pop for the sake of popping...it's also often a third party pop up (doubleclick is the devil (not in a good way)) and often the window isn't the right size for the ad (I would be so fucking if I was paying those cocksuckers at doubleclick to pop my ad and they didn't even get the window size right) and often loads way to slow to be effective....anmd worse is these goddamned java ads that requier the downloading of a .jar file...my zonealarm totally freakss out over that shit....

but I do say, I fucking love those flash ads that pop up in the middle of the page...annoying perhaps, but from an advertiser's perspective, fucking excellent.....

Being in this industry, I just got sick of pop-ups! I finally broke down, got StopZilla, and now don't get a pop-up EVER! A dream come true!

I heard Mozilla offers the same feature.

I guess the translation is we don't need to make money,
we are building a better brand name.

Also, we have had nothing newsworthy in a while, and our PR people broke the "must get press so we are seen as being relevant," before our next earnings statement.

I must be working too hard. I don't even know what iVillage is. Not sure if I've seen those flash ads you guys are talking about either. But at least I can say I know what a popup is.

"Instead, the company will focus on alternative ad formats, including variably sized standard ad units and pop-under ads, as well as ad placements in newsletters and member mailings."

pop-under ads? Aren't those consoles too?

I really don't have a problem with 1 or 2 popups, it's when there's 5 or more that it gets a bit much. I just close them.

Yeah, the floating flash stuff is great when done well. (i'm yet to test it out on surfers though i'm sure it will do well.)

Blur onload consoles and exits i think are far less annoying than something like gator, or a popup that appears over the site you're browsing and takes away focus.

I get a good ratio of views to clicks on popup consoles, do people that really dislike them click on them? i dunno.. but it makes me money :-)

Pop unders aren't nearly as annoying as pop-ups. Pop-ups pop up in your face when you're trying to read. They are as annoying as hell.

Pop unders sit underneath, and you don't even know they are there until you close the site. It's annoying only in that you have to reach over and click close.
