I'm not going to say they were the best because I don't really listen to them all that much. But their influence is universal.

I think it was Darth Porn or something that said that they are untallented. That is wholly not true. When you can get up and play music for 12 hrs straight while on LSD let me know. When you become one of the top selling artists of all time let me know. These guys invented shit, tell me who mixed western music with eastern influence before the beatles, or who was editing and using the studio as an insturment. It is just such an uneducated opinion that you have shared I felt the need to call you out on it. Besides, you listed Pink Floyd...do you think that they rose to fame because of the number of sober ppl coming to the shows and buying their albums? no, most of their supporter were stoned too, and most likely on more potent drugs too.

Anyways, my is vote Pearl Jam. They survived the grunge era, took on ticketmaster, and avoided all media for a decade, yet managed to sell out shows all across the world, and Eddie Vedder has the best live voice in rock no matter what generation you are looking at (don't agree, check out their performance of "Black" from their DVD from New York). Almost forgot, they are the only band with balls enough to release all of their live shows from their last three tours. Most bands today can't put together one 1.5 hr show to release and these guys kill it for 3 hours almost every night.

I doubt that most of these Rock pussies these days would survive a day in the music industry if they didn't get on MTV or in People or RollingStone or whatever other media outlet the kids go to now.

The Beatles Revolution Lounge in the Mirage opens to the public tonight.
Backed by Cirque du Soleil and Charles Khabouth who is the man when it comes to clubs in T.O. .

I wouldn't mind checking it out sometime.

Here's an article about the club

Everyone attempts to be so deep and pseudo-analytical.

"Well, technically - there is no best" -
"opinions are subjective, no objective way of determining the best"

Obviously. This GOES FOR EVERYTHING. We created time, the calendar, the languages we use, etc. The duality of man! You can yin-yang any subject and sit on the fence with this "well, you can never determine best" bullshit.

This is your world. Observe it objectively.

And...if you want validation of your opinion? Seek out the overwhelming majority's opinion. Do they agree? Well, it's an acquired taste, you personally enjoy.

But when millions each discover, and continue to love the Beatles - it speaks volumes about their enormously impressive catalogue. Overbearing merit for the "best" case, is heavily in their favor. Unamiously? No. But nevertheless, the league leaders if we could definitively propose the best. Which we never will, as genres/listeners ears are too diverse in sound/styles, no one could reach the universal appeal/audience unification of 60's music.

So? Get over being so pretentious and technical, and had fun with topic. Bold your text and scream out for Axl Rose. But don't act like a bitch. This question was posed for general consencious and or your opinion. Not Mr. teacher here is your apple kiss ass "well children no answer is to be found". Observe and experiment with suggestions from others taste, and or if really bad? Tolerate it and ignore. Hate the beatles, albeit I find impossible, if you will. But stop this "no best" to act intellectually astute/mediator of this discussion.

We realize the world is not black and white. Patronizing can now stop

P.s. beatles are still the best.

The Beatles are definitley the best rock band ever. Actually they're the best band ever, however you judge it. They've sold more records than anyone, they've changed the world like no one else, they're music library is insane.

Personally, I love Guns N Roses more, but Beatles are without a doubt the best band ever.

Elvis is second in terms of "best".

Hop on RIAA site and see how many more records Beatles have sold over anyone else and you won't need to ask this question anymore.

Let it be...

Quick Edit*

Having a favorite is different than "Best". My favorite basketball team is Lakers, but right now, the "Best" team is Dallas. So really, it doesn't always become objective. It comes down to stats, influence, and longevity when considering "best ever" and Beatles take the trophy, no doubt.

Well well well ...

Very well BRAD ... You caught me ... I didn't study history of music or history of rock, like you did, so I shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion about the Beatles.

My opinion that the Beatles were in fact untalented was shot down by your terrific and well documented argument that it's "wholly not true" as well as the fact that they could "play music for 12 hrs straight while on LSD". If this is not sign of greatness then I really don't know what is.

I also appreciate the fact that you believe that "These guys invented shit" ... thats my opinion about their music as well.

I am also wondering ... if you could please let me know more about the "western music with eastern influence" ... you have to excuse me but I don't speak hippie so I don?t understand what you are talking about.

lol. the fact that they could play for 12hrs straight while on LSD just shows that they don't really even need to think about it, the music just flows through them. I think this is a very good example of how naturally gifted and tallented the members of the beatles were. as far as the eastern influence, they were the first to experiment with the use of the sitar and other eastern and primarly Indian insturments. It's not hippie talk, it's just knowing what's out there and where it came from. I'm not claiming to be an expert here but I think you should know about something or someone before you start judging their tallent. I'm really not a huge beatles fan myself, but I respect their influence and the fact that they were doing something completly different from what the world had heard or seen before.

Look,

I've been listening to The Calling's Camino Palmero album a lot lately,

it's brilliant, and they've had a lot inspiration by...

U2! Edge's signature guitar sound, Bono's voice and the way they've affected on the pop-world is simply amazing!

Religion, fashion, elegancy, energy, dinamycs...I've never heard so much great songs from any band!...

The Beatles are on top too...a CLASSIC band, will never be forgotten.

The Beatles didn't become a great rock band until they stopped touring, quit writing fluff ("Hippy Hippy Shake" anyone?) and started taking drugs. Almost everything from Rubber Soul on was consistently amazing from them, and they did so much to influence future artists through their experimental wizardry and ability to write great songs than ANY other band in history, INCLUDING the Stones, who wrote more straight-forward tracks and who--let's face it--haven't had an important hit single since 1984. And I don't really know that many people who consider "Start Me Up" to be all that important in the long run.

That's how I see it anyway. I love the Stones (how can you not love anyone who wrote "Ruby Tuesday"?), but they just don't compare to the Beatles.

more like from 1970-1973 . . after that not much . . funny thing about zep, one of the 'heaviest' bands to ever perform and 1/2 the songs were acoustic

Beatles are arguably the most influential, groundbreaking band of all time.
Where does bobby dylan fit into all this, though?

I love Cobain!
I love Lennon!

They are very important and they wrote world changing songs, however . . . . "Haircut 100" is probably the most significant entity to ever create music - including those wacky guys called Mozart and Bach.

I think The Velvet Underground (particularly the Warhol years) and The Doors did just as much to influence the world of Rock. The Beatles just sold more albums and had one tied to mass murders in the Hollywood Hills.

I also think you have to look at some blues influences for all 3 of them.

The Beatles are "said to be the greatest most influential band EVER." So people rarely take the time to question what is placed on the spoon before them.

As the greatest living SONGWRITER of all time.

The Beatles, on the other hand, were a great BAND.

I also think you have to look at some blues influences for all 3 of them.

The Beatles are "said to be the greatest most influential band EVER." So people rarely take the time to question what is placed on the spoon before them.
But what exactly is there to question? They did stuff nobody else had ever done before. They surely had their own set of influences, and you gotta give Phil Spector credit for doing the work he did with them, but they are by far THE most influential band of the last 50 years. They epitomized the boy band model, they radicalized the formula of rock and roll, and they have had more popularity than any other band ever. Nirvana, while absolutely an incredible, genius band (thanx largely to Kurt, it must be said), also revolutionalized rock, but how much of their music do you hear in bands coming out today in comparison to the obvious Beatles influences you can still hear in the music of tons of new artists?

Nirvana started a fad that died out quickly. Grunge is over, thank God. Rock, however, will never die.

I didn't mention Nirvana.

I don't know why they would be in this equation at all.

Sorry. I was kinda killing two birds with one stone in that response.

Speaking of the Beatles, on Saturday night I took in a performance of Cirque du Soleil's Love at the Mirage, and I have to say, I was pretty disappointed. The music was amazing--don't get me wrong. The new mixes of classic Beatles tunes were quite extraordinary at times, but this was a Cirque du Soleil show, and as such, it totally fell under their usual mark of awe-inspiring excellence. It was the first time where the music was more important than the SHOW, and so all they did was just dress their performers up in costumes and let them do little interpretive dances all over the stage while the music played. BORING! There were a few really cool moments ("Octopuss' Garden" being one of them), but by and large, this Cirque show was very flat. If you have the chance to pick up the soundtrack, do so, but skip the show. The music is better.

Baddog or someone who actually lived in 1964 come in here.

The Beatles were rugged, the beatles were it.

Bands that followed, even 3 years after? Were the brain children of the beatles. On a calendar, or in retrospect ___ band coming out two years after "Revolver" may seem minute - may seem as if this "band you treasure" were going to be it, make it, mass audiences would enjoy those guitar rifts/notes/style, regardless of the beatles fames years predating? But fact is, Rock after Elvis went into arming? Was dying...without the beatles, without revolver, and all their other albums - without that catalyst, no way to know what would have happened. Beatles pwn your favorite band's favorite band.

Butterfly effect. Jazz, Sinatra, etc. Rock music #1? ha.

Yet the beatles made it so, which allowed for a lot.

Velvet Underground - one great album VU with Nico, but that was in 67' - so much was down well before and after, far far vaste. By many, The who to name one. So to compare them to the beatles? Ehhh, trendy. And the doors were the most pretentious, fake group known to man. I laugh at Morrison's lyrics and faux attempt at depth. Albeit some rhythms are decent. Them being influential/great/etc? riiiiight.

no. The Beatles aren't and weren't. Ever.
You really are twisted, aren't you?

The Beatles may not have been the best, but they certainly outshined GNR, and as mentioned on page 1, were definitely one of the most influential.

The year was 1963, the Beatles were hot, and I wanted one of their albums for xmas. My parents hated them, so bought me a Beatles album with no music on it. I turned it into a Frisbee within a couple days.

It would probably be worth a mint today.

Sounds as if you may have thrown the worlds most expensive Frisbee.

The album I had was all music and is worth $200-300 these days depending on condition (mine is trashed). Here's some more info on it.
