Cheap Webmaster Living in the U.S.

Where is it cheap to rent a house in a good neighbourhood near some good schools for the kids around and where it's great to work at home?

Good neighborhood + good schools = high property prices.

Unless you're in the middle of no where.

Not Rhode Island! Thanks to an apathetic public we have public corruption, which means the unions have taken over, which means high taxes and poor schools. We are the highest taxed state in the union.

Paul, Have you ever lived in the US? Bought a house here, paid taxes etc. I have a guess you've put your opinionated mouth in gear again about the US without knowing what the fuck you are talking about.

Depends on what exactly you are looking for? Cheap housing can be found in parts of the midwest for example and if you pick the right area, the schools for kids are more than fine.

What do you call cheap? Do you need a city with plenty of night life?

cheap would be about to rent a house with 4 bedrooms 2-3 restrooms with shower and bath and a garage for 2 cars. of course cable access and a walmart about 15 minutes away - and all of this for about 400-600$ rent a month. nightlife isn't important to me at all; I can fly to vegas once a year and believe me, that's enough

...............................................

This is Des Moines Ia. to a T. Perfect place for porn, lots of poor people who will work for 9 bucks a hr. BUT you have to work under the radar cause its dead center of the christian Taliban. (fuck me, my spelling today sux)

Seriously, you can get a 2 bd/1 bth - nice -(equal to a 1200-1400 unit in la) for around 450-500 a month. but why rent when prices are so cheap to buy.

and yes, if your in the mindset nightlife is only a flight away to vegas, its quite livable.

still............................. you have to like 4 seasons weather. And fat chics.. lots of fat chics. (Another motherlode though for the right website. HUGE boobs to, I'm talking bushel basket sized boobs.) When I'm there to visit I never saw so many huge hootered chics. errr, big gals. The chics tend to be string bean types, but a LOT of blondes.)

For what you list, I'm afraid you're going to have to double your budget, even for the bargain (but still nice) locations. I really feel sorry for anyone on a middle-class income today. If you weren't playing the real estate game the last few years, simply to keep ahead of the insanity, then I don't know how you ever catch up. Crisis coming.

It can be found everywhere except for good neighborhoods in the exciting cities.

The biggest city you will find with that is Philadelphia, which is the cheapest you will find in the northeast. $700 will still get you a 1 bedroom in a decent part of Center City.

The south as whole is fairly cheap as you can find similar deals in Houston, Dallas, Memphis all the way to Miami (away from the beaches) Austin is probably the best choice of the southern states.

The midwest is cold. No reason to do that unless you have to.

I don't know much about the northwest but I'm willing to bet there's some great deals in the Seattle area and Portland definitely.

You can also forget about any cool parts of california.

Vegas is pretty cheap off the strip. Phoenix isn't too bad either.

I agree with DaddyHalbucks. Rhode Island housing market is still pretty rediculous as are taxes and the education system is being watered down year after year. (although I'm sure we are not the only state that waters down the corriculum)

-- see, I even had to spell check curriculum

Everything is relative, but the cheapest in the US which fits those parameters, as a couple have said, must be the mid-West.

Around here (SE Kansas) for example, good 4-5 bedroom houses go for $400-$600 a month and at least by US standards the schools are reasonable (one in particular). You can live on a decent sized plot in town or get a few acres in the country.

In terms of entertainment, dining, etc it's a million miles away from city life, but that is seen as a bonus by some. If small-small-town life isn't for you, there are larger places where rent may go up to around $1,000.

Distances between one place and the next can be pretty big, but in driving-time terms, since there is no traffic congestion, the gap narrows.

Yeah it's not hard to find for $600/mo. as long as you are somewhere in the middle of the country basically. Check apartments.com for example or somewhere like that. It'll even show newspaper ads for the search area you select.

Unless your kid is gifted you wont find a good school in a cheap neighborhood, most of public schools outside rich areas are useless, prep schools are the way to go nowadays.

Rents prices have gone through the roof lately all over the country. Even in the cheaper places to live rent can sometimes cost you twice as much or more a month as it would to buy.

Actually Nashville has lots of good schools. I was planning on private school till I went and saw the elementary school for my oldest daughter. Oh and I live in a excellent neighborhood at a good price, with everything we need within 15 minutes of us.

Good luck on finding a cheap place! It gets harder every year.
