Everything before OSX was garbage. AmigaOS was better.

OSX is a nice OS, but I have to have mediocre, overpriced Mac hardware to run it. I'd love to run it, but there's no way I'll buy mac hardware to do so.

So I'll just stick with rock-solid Win2k. The only time I reboot it is when I get paranoid that I might be hurting my hardware by leaving the pc on for weeks at a time. lol.

I have been using Macs for years. Problem is Imacs are to real MACS as eMachines are to Pentium 4.

You can find many posts I have made in this argument, I own many of both platforms machines. ;)

But I am ProMac mostly. Gotta yse a lil PC though.

I think the new ads for Mac are smart, but I think they should focus more on how you wont see blue screens and how you wont have to buy a new OS every 6 months because your winblows had too many bugs in it.

Mac's aren't exactly overpriced. Yes, they are expensive.. but so are most IBM models, and all Sony models. The reason they are expensive isn't as simple as most Mac-bashers would like to think.

With every Mac you get a good video card, a good sound card, good RAM, nice accessories, stylish case, software bundle, optical mouse, good components... While no one of those things may be worth the extra money, the truth is that if you spec-out a Dell machine with all the same stuff, you actually pay *more*.

It is a shame that Apple doesn't have a lot of low-end machines... but frankly, they know what they are doing. How many other PC vendors aren't *losing* money every quarter these days? Have you seen Gateway's stock? Upmarket isn't a bad place to be right now... higher margins.

I have used Macs since 6th grade. I had DOS before that, and an Amiga before that... (Well, my family did!) I have been a Windows support tech back in the Windows 95 days, and have used a few recent versions of Windows when I have had to. I will never go back. I get my work done faster, I get a much nicer machine, and I don't pull my hair out half the time. No contest. Really.

How many people who bash Macs have actually given them a chance? Sat down and used one for long enough to get used to the *differences*... Specced-out a similar system from Dell or whoever to see if they are *really* overpriced. The truth is, the results would surprise you.

Of course, the truth is also that it doesn't matter. I use what I like, you use what you like. Doesn't phase me. There are differences, but clearly we can all getr our jobs done, so why worry?

Mac doesn't need to make low end machines because one thing always overlooked in this argument is the fact that most Macs, since before the ole 8600 domination have been ProSumer level. Not consumer level. These chips and processors when assembled have been regarded as "Supercomputers" for years now, hence the G4 commercials with the tanks surrounding the box spinning. And I am not sure which Countries but some were not allowed to Import them due to whatever classifications they see fit (not sure on how that went but I read something on it years back).

People complain about the price of a 4k machine yet some of my music software cost damn near triple that. 4k on a mac is all hardware, and it is not consumer level, therefore the price. I have Mac software plug ins that emulate Vintage Sound Modules from the 60's that cost more than a Mac. Not to mention I have a friend with a full AVID digital video editing suite that ran him no less than 40k in addition to those SONY SUPERVHS decks and Swivel stick editing boxes.

Designers and Music Producers spend 40k on digital editing software, do you think a Dual mac g4 is gonna hurt them at 6k with a 21 Cinema Display? Shit my boy has dal 21" Cinema Displays man, that shit althought setting him back close to 5k, is worth every farking minute with 3 feet of Monitor Screen in front of you working between both monitors. Wish I could afford that hehehe... he edits Wildlife footage for some company.

I have NEVER played on a PC that could handle the type of damage I have done on a G4 copy n pasting 3 gig audio files from track to track while burning a dvd copy and stretching text in Photoshop6.

Mac blows away all processes and filter speeds in all graphics programs under all circumstances, and has done so since the early 90's or whenever Intel started that Pentium thing. I wont look up the links for these reports, but do a google search, Intel issues the report so it ain't rigged. ;)

To say "Macs suck" is to say pioneers of the GUI interface sucks, remember Microsoft wants to be a true GUI as Mac always has been. This debate can go on forever, and as stoned as I am I believe I could carry on. When Xerox was inventing the mouse who was stealing the ideas? Who has tried to be like who over the decades since the garage computer groups split and Bill Gates went his way to form Microsoft.

Are not 90+% of all video games designed on Mac? I know 90+% of all Cd Covers designed in big graphics houses are Mac Based. Every recording studio I have worked in has been Mac since 89, with the introduction of that beastly Macintosh 8700 with side panels and the most solid Midi Timecode rate second only to the Atari 520 ST hardwired MIDI Data Interfaces for old school gaming and electronic music, late eighties.

Like it or not Mac in most ways will always be superior due to its growing fan base with the introduction of the iMac, as you see above "it looks cool and my girl likes it" (j/k Hoop).... while to serious Mac users is a joke, is still, (judging by their quarterlies) quite profitable even with their latest releases and variations of the iMac and iBook, both toys to real macs, much like Emachines are viewed next to a hand built Kick ass PC, which BTW a solid ass PC rocks, I own a few. ;)

One can drive a Porsche because one can, the seats in a Volkswagon Bug can be the same Bucket seats out of Cadillac, but its still not a Cadillac.

Damn those fucking dual 21" minotors kicked ass.

Pet peeve of mine... A lot of people, especially here in the UK, spell "Mac" as "MAC"... Because, I guess, they assume that since "PC" (two letter acronym) is all-caps, "Mac" (three letter abbreviation) must be too. Weird stuff.

A "Mac" is a "Macintosh"... A kind of apple, as the man says.

true macs are more expensive but as many people like to say "you get what you pay for"

but i just came from www.macrumors.com and basiclly if the G5 processor is going to be either an IBM based on the Power4 (can you say fucking sweet) or from the motorola 8500 series (just creamed in my shorts). you can all imagine what the production cost of the mac is actually like, so that should give you an idea of why apple machines cost so much.

and about the low-end apple machines you can still get the original iMac style for $799.

and the tank commercial was actually true, when the 1st generation of G4's were released the US government put a complete export ban on them for roughly 3 months because of sensitive cyptology.

i actually had a copy of linuxppc which was the basis for OS X thats how they first tested the mach kernel.

btw i have a 2 button mouse and a regular moniter port, so looks like you need to look at the pics alittle closer. the mouse is USB tho so your shit out of luck for that PS2 port

Id imagine that's another main reason they seem faster and handle vid/graphics editing so well.

Actually that's true from what i understand... the imacs dont use scsi.. but when we build servers the difference we see between a scsi based system and a ide system is amazing.

So maybe that explains why with nothing running but osx my itunes was choking while playing a cd?

we upgraded the ram to 256 and the thing is still kinda slow.

but DAMN that os is pretty.

OS X on Intel:

This is not possible with current builds. There is plenty more on top of the BSD underpinnings that is not so cross-platform. However, Apple has been working on this. They will *never* have their OS running on beige boxen, and here's why...

First, profit margins. Apple is a hardware company, and a high-end one at that. Their margins are good, that's why they are still profitable. Without the hardware sales, they would make a huge loss. The platform would surge until they ran out of money, and then it would die.

Second, quality and integration... Apple does a great job, because they build the whole widget. The experience is good because things work together, and they can really integrate. Plus, there are no current machines on their platform with crap components. So people don't sit down at a crappy machine (unless it is old) and get an experience that ruins their opinion of how fast Macs are. If you can run OS X on a machine with bargain basement components, Apple can't control the experience, and poof! no brand.


SCSI Hard Drives:

Apple used to onl yuse SCSI, when SCSI was far and away the very best out there. When other standards caught up, they started to use them in many of their machines. If you want a real high-end machine, you still get SCSI, for the most part, but now it is an option.


Two-button Mice:

$19 at Wal-Mart. Mac OS X is programmed to work with them out of the box, and they do all of the stuff you'd expect them to. Next?

yep i've been a mac guy since middle school.

well i can't make your mind up for you but apple has always been a pioneer, they made scsi, usb, and firewire. the OS is a no contest win if you ask me, some people say that they choose a MS machine because of the lack of programming on the mac, but all the programs that you need are already installed on the new macs, hell the even have apache preinstalled in the OS if you want to use it as a server. the only true lacking for programming on a mac is the gaming industry and quark (they really fucked up).

if your looking for stability go for a mac, performance go for a mac, but if you hung up on Mhz go for the PC, see for me to explain the Mhz myth you should have a pretty good grip on processor build, but G4 series processors cut or random tasks because of less pipelines and more actual core tasks.

you see with a PC all you buy now is the processor, whats the use in having a new 2.8 Ghz processor if your system bus speed is 166Mhz and your ram is 133Mhz, Macs run cooler and cost less as far as electricity. look at the benchmark tests and see what you get.

just seems more practical to me.

and the domain is worth alot more then i could afford, 2 letters at that, i'd put atleast a 3 mill price tag on it

There is much more to OS X than the GUI. There is much more to the GUI on Mac OS X than the surface images. Finally, much of the OS is trademarked, copyrighted, and patented... Exactly how would someone get away with copying it?

Finally, as I said about the integration, and for a number of other reasons, a Mac is much more than just a pretty UNIX box. The UNIX underpinnings are one feature... but a lot of the extra stuff on top is a much bigger deal to most users. The point of the Mac is that right now, it has a more serious system under the hood than any commercial OS, and a better interface than any *nix.

I'm not worried about Apple losing their position.
