My wife has been to the chiropractor before and the cure was worse than the condition. She had to do multiple back stretching exercises and was in excruciating pain DURING them and immediately afterwards. When she finally STOPPED doing the exercises altogether (against her doctor's advice mind you), all the pain, including the original pain she was there for in the first place, went away. Go figure.

We also had to sell our sex swing.

Never been to one. In the SPA downtown I get awesome back massages, once a week.

Are you thinking about going to the chiropractor? I hear it can be dangerous if they don’t know what they are doing.

I go to one when my right shoulder forces me to. He makes the pain stop.

I don't like going though, because I don't like it when he does the grab-your-chin-twist-your-head bit.

Keeping on a regular massage schedule keeps me from having to do a chiro very often, thank God.

If you can find one that doesn't tell you that one of your legs are shorter than the other and that you need a long schedule of therapy to *cure* that...give him/her a try.

My best friend is a chiropractor and she married one, so I get adjusted fairly regularly. I don't believe in most of the chiropractic mantra (they don't take any kind of aspirin, Tylenol, pain killers, etc., don't like antibiotics, don't have their kids vaccinated, and so on) but I can definitely tell a difference when I go a long time without an adjustment. It does seem to make me feel better and I have fewer headaches when I stick to a regular schedule.

No way in hell would I ever pay for any of it, though.

I got to an alternative Chiro that uses therpuetic massage and spinal manipulations instead of the twisting and cracking.. I am afraid to go to a regular chiro for fear of being paralyzed...lots of bone spurs iand arthritis in my neck. Sucks..ready to have an operation to get rid of this pain and bullshit.

Juicy,

I've had a misconfigured L-5 that I've always had problems with, as in slippage. When it happens, I'm bent over and can't hardly move.

I found the medical profession only wanted surgery, fusion and shit like that. Not on my list of things needed. So, I opted to let a chiro give it a try. MY GOD! Instant relief!

I'm a firm believer in them. Many nerves move "through" your spinal column. Move a disc, pinch a nerve and my first thought is "CHIRO, NOW!"

They come from two different schools of teaching. I forget the names but one is hard and the other is soft. If the guy you go to is to rough on you, ask him what are the two types of Chiro style. He'll tell you and then ask him which he prescribes to. Then, find one from the other and go with him/her.

A good chiro won't cause you any discomfort at all. And they're well worth their fee! While they're called "bonecrackers," they can do wonders to you. I'd see a chiro long before I saw an MD!

Like everything - there are good and bad in every profession.

Only been to one chiro and it was sheer hell in his torture chamber - but he converted a cripple within an hour of treatment and could not have paid him enough money for that (Can't remember what it cost, but not much)

Hell, doctors kill more folks daily - simply by writing out more scripts for poison - it's an addictive habit writing scripts in the medical profession

I'm torn. I've been to some that I thought were great and others that did nothing for me.

My suggestion is to stick with a good massage therapist.

Above Shamans? That sounds even better than a doctor

Know nothing about Shamanism, but it existed almost from prehistoric times and mixed in with eg Inca and Native American cultures. We have plenty to learn from these times, but we are slow learners.

Kinda related - was supposed to fly down to Machu Picchu yesterday for a few weeks, awesome place and still minute segments of the culture left

http://www.sacredsites.com/americas/...hu_picchu.html

Will get there in 2007 and find out the benefits of coca leaf - bet it's safer than a boring box of Tylenol

Ive had 5 and the first 3 were worthless. The fourth was good but I checked out a fifth on a freinds reccomendation and he is the shit. He gets into his job and wants you to be better. For 5o bucks he gives acupuncture and then works your body. So there are good ones out there, its just finding one.

I go to one every week or two weeks depending how I feel.
I got to and ART (active release) Chiropractor.

I was in a car accident 3 years ago, and ended up with bad back and shoulder problems. Had limited mobility, and always in pain. Doctors wanted to do surgery on my shoulder to remove scar tissue. I said f that and was told to get massages every 4 days. After more then a year of going to several different massage places and never getting results I went to this ART chiro place.

First time hurt like nothing I have ever felt befor. But 3 or 4 hours later I didnt feel any pain anymore, and that was the first time in a year and half that I hadnt been in pain. And its only gotten better since then, I have pretty much full mobilty back, and almost no scar tissue.

You can request they not crack your neck you know too. I had xrays done befor going too, to make sure arteries were where they are supposed to and stuff like that, because thats really the only way things go bad.

hmm, do a google search for the stats on strokes caused by neck alignments.
Then do a search for DEATHS caused by giving an improper prescription.
Far more deaths then suspected strokes.

As said everything has its risks, how do you know your not going to be killed driving to your appointment?

Just go somewhere reputible to minimize risk, thats all you can do.

Chiropractic therapy is very valuable, but like any medical treatment, it can be overrated and misapplied.

Get references where possible.

My mom went to one every month for years because she has a really bad back. her back would feel better for about two days but it never really got any better until she had surgery. I have often wondered if this guy bending and twisting her actually made it worse.

Any chiropractor that doesnt have a structural massage therapist on hand or send you to one after treatment, is pretty much a quack. I'm not talking about a Swedish massage therapist, that you would usually find in a spa, I'm talking about a structural massage therapist that has studied postural and muscular imbalances and knows the treatments to correct them.

Any skeletal imbalance you have had for any length of time, will cause your muscles to shorten in certain places, and lengthen in others, and contribute to the imbalance. A chiropractor will adjust your bones, but if you dont follow up with massage to lengthen your muscles in the right places, their tension will slow or even reverse the progress your chiropractor made in a very short period of time. This basically ensures you are a client for life. Stretching helps, but no where near as well as a Neuromuscular massage (NMT). NMT is very targetted and specific and works wonders in conjunction with Chiropractic treatments.

Make sure you have a chiropractor thats interested in curing you, and has a time frame for recovery. He should lay it all out for you, if he cant fix your problems in X amount of time, he should refer you to someone else who may be able to help better. Just be careful, there are a lot of shady chiropractors out there.

All true... And you have to be regular with your treatments... My Chiro is fabulous, I'm better than I've felt in years and he has a whole stable of amazing massage therapists, chiropodists, and more available in-office.
