Legal threats...... over Geo-IP promo?

I use Geo-IP tools with several dating and webcam sponsors.

I got this email from a surfer today...

Quote:
you have all these postings from Calvary Georgia , the population there is only about 50 people so how can you post all these woman from there it simply not true. Another false advertisment , correct it or will be pursued by D.A.
Now I really really doubt i'll ever hear anything of it again. Besides, the source code of the page makes it obvious it's a sponsors iframe and not data coming from my server.

But, don't you think it would be nice to take small redneck-hick towns out of geo-ip databases? (the ones used for advertising). Its like a dead giveaway that its bullshit. It should list the closest major city or something. Or at least remove any "towns".

why do you think an iframe absolves you from any responsibility for what is shown on YOUR SITE. particularly when you know its BS to begin with.

Whether or not its true would be hard to prove lol. Maybe the person signing up used a diff zipcode etc. Intent I would think would have to be proven. Slipper slope no?

I agree. Displaying the nearest major city would be much more believable rather than displaying any location within 100 miles or database location names that nobody would put as their location.

For example Las Vegas. 100% of results should say "Las Vegas" not 50% or less and the rest showing as Henderson, Boulder City, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor or some "... historic site"

Upon further review, it says "Girls near <CityName>".

Now, you tell me what counts as 'near' someone?

But, I have seen other sites say "Girls IN <CityName>", that might be a problem.

Yeah im not, my point was more that some dating & webcam sites geo-ip tools are listing hundreds of profiles in towns with populations of 50 people.

This probably actually hurts signups...... just somethin for you program owners to think about

What are the damages if a car dealer runs an ad for a great deal on a car they never had for sale? The bait and switch is illegal.

These geo-IP personals ads are something I could see the FTC getting involved with in the future.

I wouldn't be surpised at some point in the future if geo-targeting ads come under fire. It really is false advertising. It's nothing major and there are no real damages but it is missleading none the less.

With that being said I do use it myself. But I don't use it like an idiot like most companies do. I always thought the page with 10 girls all from your town looked fake. How many people believe that, even if you are in a major city what are chances that all of the girls are from your town.

here is a free hint for you guys. Say you have 10 girls on the page. Pick the 2 best looking ones and use the person's real location (regular geo targeting). Take 2 more girls and use a random city that is close to them. Take the last 6 girls and just use random big cities.

They will still notice the girls from their city and click on them and it will be 100% more believable. It's still fake, tricking them but they wont be able to notice at least and it converts a lot better.

exactly. It is way down on their list of things I am sure. But I wouldn't be surprised if they do something about it one day.

In southern Arizona some geo ads list hot babes that live in desert ghost towns.
