Man Slays Burger King Worker With Bow Tie

LINDENHURST, Ill.-- An Illinois judge denied bond for a man charged in the death of a Wisconsin woman whose body was found at the Burger King restaurant where she worked. James Ealy, 42, remains at the Lake County Jail.
Prosecutors claim Ealy strangled a Burger King manager to death with her uniform's bow tie after robbing the restaurant. They said he didn't want to leave behind a witness to the robbery.

Ealy was arrested and charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Mary Hutchison of Trevor, Wis., which is about 10 miles north of the restaurant.

Police said another employee who had just come to work found Hutchison's body at about 5:15 a.m. on Monday. They said her death appeared to be related to a robbery.

Police said that while searching Ealy's apartment, they found cash and coins "linked" to an emptied Burger King safe, along with clothes prosecutors said Ealy was wearing during the killing, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

The paper reported that prosecutors said Ealy's criminal record includes violent offenses and he has served time in prison. Police said that in his past crimes, witnesses helped convict him.

Hutchison had worked at Burger King for 14 years. She was robbed and pistol-whipped at another Burger King restaurant where she worked, according to the Sun Times.

She took a job working daytime hours at the Lindenhurst Burger King so that she could feel safe, her ex-husband, Grant Nothnagle, told the paper.

Prosecutors said that Hutchison's killing was not connected to the previous Burger King robbery.

Until Hutchison's killing, there hadn't been a homicide in the community since September 1997.
