Whether you get invited into a gathering at a bar, hotel room, or wherever it's like you are being invited into their home. You just have to respect that and it's my observation that most of us do. Like anything else in life, it's more or less an 80/20 thing. It's gracious to entertain, a liability and a LOT of effort. It's always hard to forsee the X factor when you are around people you just don't know.

Guest lists is a great idea but this was just spontaneous and never would have worked. It was obvious there were at least a few people there who didn't belong there but it was a small, quiet group so I don't think anyone was the least bit concerned.

I'm always learning and I think if I ever get a "do-over" with my own hospitality suite situation where 25 people follow me into my room I might just take a minute to quiz people on their industry affiliation/knowledge. Sounds good in theory, I think, I mean there are any number of basic knowledge questions that a lay person wouldn't know but any newB would know. In practice, though, I think we just all keep doing what we're doing and play the numbers - just make our best judgement calls along the way. Having a fun time is always a team effort and most of the guests did their best to not just have fun themselves but ensure that a good time was had by everyone

Thank you again for your hospitality Eric, Sunny and Shelly! Special thanks to Odie for experiencing this with me and having my back and Tyler for talking to the po-po downstairs and making me want to be about 20 pounds lighter so that I'm a more appropriately sized metrosexual. LOL

hahahh

You should offer 100 for a nice photoshop contest, I am sure he's going to end up seeing it, since he must have some buddies here.

Everything ended well with the po-po, I just happened to be leaving the room when they were perched outside the door. They left after I spoke to them in the hall (sober) and explained it was just a BS call from some disgruntled person that was uninvited from the party. It was after I recanted the 'faggot' part to the cops that they must have bought my version because that's when the guy radioed it in to report a false complaint.

Fortunately, neither the police or Marco ended up crashing the party because there was much beer left over from go-carting that still had to be drank.

Cheers,

Brad

Thats why there were so many cops outside when we left the place. That guy stood out like a soar thumb, always the non industry people who try and look like the biggest pimps.

very well put Brad. It really does suck when streangers end up at our parties and we are so welcoming and accommodating that we let our guards down. Needless to say this guy will be remembered and will never be allowed to enter another event held in Toronto again!

More appropriately tho, whenever I invite someone who is not in the industry to a party as my guest, they are briefed in advance to the premise of hte party and what to expect. If this guy was a tag along, then the onus is on the person who invited him as well b/c he failed to ensure that his guest was "kool". Not that we can control what our guests do but we can let them know in advance what is expected of a guest and in the industry.

Brad,

It is funny, but I actually make sure our events are now invite only and guest aren't told where to go until just short of the actual event. And I am not even slightly kidding.

It is unfortunate, but the more "open" your gathering is, the more likely things like this will occur.

I am glad everything worked out in the end, sounds like the Christmas gathering was a good time had by all.

Will you be in Tahoe?

P.S. - Thanks for the ride to the train station Odie!

I think Pipecrew and SleazyDream are right on...

$100 by PayPal for the best photochop of this clown!

My choice and of course I will consider everyone's feedback. Tentatively, let's say maybe winner gets picked on Thursday or Friday, depending on how many entries we get?

Fewer none industry people can get in and limit the amount of "guests" each person can bring. At the Capitalbash in Ottawa this fall one guy tried to register himself and 16 guests.
But I'm just a webmaster who has been around for a long time and is no longer with any company (any offers out there?), so maybe you have to get a someone to vouch that you are an affiliate.
Lists are a good idea.

more uninvited guests eh?

Nice to see our industry learning from past mistakes.
Something bad is going to happen at a webmaster event in the future, and most likely at the hands of an uninvited guest, or someone who simply does not belong there.

The person that invited the guy should also take some responsibility for the situation. I have invited my brother to industry events and if he EVER got out of line then I would have him outta there before anyone could ever say anything. I know and expect it to be my ass if he acted up since I got him in. He also knows that and respects the situation. Just because its "adult" and a party does not mean its also not still a "work" party in many ways.

That's a fine compliment! I enjoy having lots of unique shirts, it's just thanks to my wife taking the time out with the kids to do a few hand painted ones on essentially blank canvasses. I have another one that our two boys did, 2.5yr old twins, I'll have to wear that to my next tradeshow!
