Bank error in your favor. Collect $100!

What's the largest amount any bank ever gave you by mistake? Once a cashier entered a check amount wrong, giving me an extra $300. More than once I've been given an extra $100 bill by mistake.

Did I return the extra money? ... Sometimes.

I remember a few months back, and ATM machine was giving out £20 notes, instead £10.

Everyone was on their cell phone calling everybody to get down and withdraw some money quick.

Wasn't long before the machine was empty...

$5,000 deposited in my checking account from a $500 check. They corrected it a week later. It made me sad.

I love hearing about the morons that think the ATM made a mistake, and then all their friends are going to that same ATM and getting more money out. I remember seeing it on the news once. The bank has logs of how much money is actually dispensed and they had to pay back every penny.

Not my bank but a third party biller once wired me twice, to the tune of abut $3k in my favour. I was too honest and returned the dupe even though I could have just ignored them (it was my final payment). They would have been down about $80-100 in fees and currency conversion losses for that mistake.

Another time I received a letter from the bank a couple of weeks after we settled some land saying that an audit had picked up an error and we were due a $500ish refund. The land sales company gave us a discount for early settlement but the bank didn't take this into account when calculating stamp duty, so they charged too much.

It wasn't so much an error in our favour, more finding that we had been overcharged. I probably wouldn't have noticed it myself.

I've had 6 figure errors in my favor. Of course they corrected the mistake fast, but I was able to keep the nice amount of interest it generated.

I remember seeing on a current affairs story that a bank accidentally deposited $120k into a woman's account. She transferred some to another account then back to see if it was real. The bank found the error quickly (or she reported it, can't remember) but they refused to refund the tax that our state govt used to impose on deposits... which included electronic transfers. From memory it was something like $800 (x2) she had to cough up because of the bank's error.

$3500. About 15 years ago I cashed in a GIC for $3500. A few days later I noticed they'd credited it to my bank acount twice. I just kept quiet about it to see what would happen. Several weeks later they took the money out of my account.

What was the charge supposed to be? $3.85?

I returned a $799 item for a refund once (on my credit card) and the noob put it through as a purchase! Luckily I noticed before I signed.

Charge was $18.42 (house FULL of kids). She did $182.42, tried to credit it, charged $182.42 again, then charged the $18.42

with all the "big brother" electronic records and cameras, can't imagine that banks can't trace big mistakes right back to the second it happened
