My maid is stealing from me ...

And you'll never believe what she's stealing. Oatmeal. That's right, Oatmeal.

I started noticing that my quaker instant flavored oatmeal packages were being split up. There'd be one of a particular flavor, when two come in the box and I never eat only one package. So today I opened a brand new box, ate two and went to the gym. Sure enough when I get back, there's two packages missing.

I've helped this lady pay medical bills for her children she couldn't cover, and generally been a very good employer.

So what should I do? Beat her senseless with an oatmeal box?

Do you speak spanish? If not find someone who does. Whoever does simply confront her and tell her if she steals again you will fire her. She also owes you money for the 2 packets she stole, so she works for free for an hour.

I more or less speak Spanish. That is to say, with enough wild hand gestures, I can make my point.

Now that I think about it, I'm going through dog food at about 1.5 the rate I used to. I know the dogs aren't eating more, because they get strict portions.

The bitch of it is that a large bag of the dog food is $100, and only lasts two weeks. Total feeding bill for premium food for three large dogs in Costa Rica ~$400 a month.

No matter how well you treat em or overpay - it's always the same. Must have seen at least five maids depart quickly for the same reason.

I live in Costa Rica. A police officer makes around $200 a month for full time work. My maid comes in three times a week for 3 hours a day. She's paid pretty well, all things considered.

Dog food costs $400 a month because I have 300+ pounds of Rottweilers that eat a very expensive, special fish and potato dog food.

That's what I thought years back and ingored the odd theft - especially if it was food. The problem is it's never "just food" - all sorts of shit then starts to go missing.

Still don't understand what the deal is on food - if they need food, they just have to say and no biggie. But.. it's never just food

I agree with the people who say to let her go because she is or will be stealing other things from you. Just test her by putting an exact amount of change, say $40.00 worth, in a bowl in the kitchen... wait a few days and count it.

That pretty much summarises the scenario Sly - it's not about oatmeal, just that WC may have noticed that being very obvious. Half the time you'd never notice the place being cleaned out.

I've had camera lenses go, the friggin cutlery (and not because it was thrown in the trash in error), ladies clothes - especially designer label stuff, money - even foreign currency notes, and once a portable TV slid thru the gates

No domestic staff are permitted to bring bags into the house - they are left at the security gate. They are also subject to random searches on the way out. Sad shit.

The flip side is that maids are well-paid and they know very well that if they have any problems, they can just say, and there is a solution - there is no need to steal stuff.
