What will have VALUE 200 years from now?

Here's what i want to do.

I'd like to leave something to my great great great great great grand kids. IN a time capsel and I want it to have some value for them - something that will help them in their lives financally in the future.

So i've been thinking about what to leave them that will have value 200 years from now.

here's how my thought process is going.

real estate - nope - property taxes and such - too public and easy to loose. neighborhoods change - society changes. war can wipe out all property ownership...

gold. good idea but technology exists now to change one form of matter to another - cost is ENORMOUS but it ALREADY exists so that cost will just go down in the future over 200 years so gold isn't a good bet. neither is diamonds - they can be made - or any other precious gems. I personally think by the end of our current lifetimes things like gold and diamonds will be worth much less then they are today.

cash/bank account, mutual funds, etc - once again - war, political change, etc can easily wipe this out. as can taxes

so i'm thinking that historical artifacts are probally the BEST way to go - and I'm thinking smaller the better with high value - things like good quality roman coins 2000 years old already.... that line of thinking. ORIGIONAL ones cannot be replaced and will always have value unless a time machine is made.

would like your input thoughts though on this...

what else could be done?

ideas please

Wth are you guys talking about? "Space related"? In 200 years won't space travel be easier, as in, value in space related items (I guess like dust/rock samples?) will go down... Right?

I am really confused... and stoned right now. It's all good, but someone explain please.

Wow good question. I think you're missing one big point, in that I'd want it to relate them to me, and who I was, what it was like when I lived, etc. So in that sense I'd definitely leave a video of myself explaining, maybe a tour of my place, my city, transportation, etc. A video collage.

Next I'm thinking if I were to get something from an ancestor right now, what would I want? I think maybe an assortment of interesting unique stuff would be cool to have. The coins are a great idea because they'll easily last. Maybe some beatles memoribilia? A few magazines... golf ball? Just little stuff we consider normal that might not be so normal in 200 years.

As to high value old things, I'd inquire with an antique expert who would understand better the way things age, and what would be valuable.

Land is the only thing that people will need. 200 years from now hopefully we’ll be almost through with normal monetary needs (we’ll be by no means an utopia, however). Oh and maybe those 'actroid' things. People 200 years from now will love to see the ancient robots we had and compare them to their hot robot sex slaves.

too risky to try and send land 200 years into the future.

Good question, I dont know. Normally, I'd say buy stock in companies that dominate that sector. However, the major players in that industry probably wont exist for another 100 years.

maybe some rare stamps, coins, art.

hedge your bets with some items like gold, jewels, stocks, a domain name, and property anyway.

Old coins are always good.
Postage stamps have really stood the test of time.

Yet you could go risky.
Wide assortment of properly stored DNA samples of a super large assortment of the worlds animals.

Whatever you do though, make sure you put a jack in the box that springs out when opened and scares the crap out of them as well.

Lastly maybe a letter or diary explaining yourself and if you feel a given way an apology for what our generation may have done.

Why not leave a journal of your life along with newspapers, things that were "new" when you were alive, etc? I've been doing a lot of geneology investigating and finding newspaper articles on relatives from the 1700's is VERY interesting.

Not everything has to have a dollar value put on it

First of all, you have to look at 1806 vs. 2006 to get an idea of the type of things that stand the collectors test of time.

AOL 1.0 disk. Document with Microsoft letterhead signed by Bill Gates.

Gas station artifacts. Pen, keychain, print ads, receipt for one gallon of gas.

Currency from a size vs. future value perspective is good IF money collectors are still around. Once we go all digital it's possible that nobody will give a damn about old money. But I'd play it safe and put some mint condition bills in.

New York Times from 9/12. Won't be worth as much as a Titanic newspaper is today because people save this sort of thing now, but it will definitely have value.

People have brought up space memorabilia. I agree, but I think it would have to be just the right stuff. This one is difficult to predict.

The lightbulb we know today is in it's final hour, so a lightbulb in original packaging. Preferably one that claims to be long lasting on the box. The company may also matter. GE is probably a good bet.

A DVD of the movie AI. And an old VHS of Star Wars. Think of how we view Jules Verne today.

A set of new clothing with tags in a style that men and women typically wear today. Avoid anything that is a fad. Companies and store tag could matter. Levi jeans with a Wal-Mart tag would be a safe bet.

What about some guns and bullets, new and old? They would last fine, and I doubt anyone will have seen one like that 200 years from now

No one saw the 2 part South Park where Cartman was frozen for 500 years and all he wanted was a Wii.

Matt 26z hit it on the head except you would need to include all the devices needed to play back the media...sorta like that thing we sent on a neverending journey out into space that aliens might find.

You wouldnt want to leave a collection of VHS tapes and in some freak accident all that was left was a few hundred Beta players....Everything you choose to leave should have info on how to get it work, even what alternating current is if that was to change.

Oh yeah and your standard high school revolving Globe

original handwritten autographs from people who you think will be in the history books...

What if somebody had a, "Hey wassup from Abraham Lincoln" autograph, it would be priceless.

Guns is a good idea also.
