I hate the metric system..I still resort back to imperial as much as I can.It wasn't like Canadians had a choice,we just adapted and had to learn it.If I had a choice I would stick to imperial

small secret man - gallon is 3.8 litter in metric. And you'd never say 35/97th of a gallon, but we can split litter in any part easily. You can't do this with a gallon.

How could it be more effective for small appliances?

trasfering 220 voltage is more effective a has lesser amount of power lost during the transfer, you need to treasfer less ampers to do the same watt job (as you surelly know Watts power = Voltage * Ampers).
And it;s not bigger thread when you get hit by it.
For machinery we use 380Volts.

Thats the reason why most od Europe changed to 220. My country did it in 1970's.

BTW US power outlets are one of the most dangerous and less safe is the whole world, the only system I've that allows user to touch the part under voltage.

takes ages for people to accept the switch, most 50+ y/o in the UK don't understand metric and the road signs are still in miles, and if its hot they use fahrenheit but if its cold they use Celcius.. fucked up..hehe

I can split a gallon down to a half gallon, a quart, a pint, a cup, a tablespoon, or a teaspoon.

The question is, what the fuck would I do with a tsp of gas?

The point being, since you are obviously too ignorant to figure it out, is that while the metric system may use the same terminology (ie: liter) to measure area and liquids, we don't.

You would never buy a square inch of milk.

Why don't you answer the question? What do I have to gain by going metric?

Mr. Marks 11-05-2006 12:51 AM

Backward compatibility costs with the shit that already exists. The USA is the largest economy in the world......imagine the cost when we have convert existing physical, techno, and cultural infrastructure to metric.

On the flipside, it does create tons of jobs. Think: y2k conversion.

Funny, I have a fuel receipt here that says I just bought 8.67 gallons of gasoline. How much easier can that be?

this is beautiful example of metric system. 8.67 does not exist in English Imperial system you love. This is metric system (100 smaller units in one big).

Here you see, that English Imperial is not capable to measure fuel you bought and you have use metric methodology to easily measure hunderds of gallon.

Funny is, that by trying to defend English Imperial System, you just show, that it's outdated and metrics is much better...

It is easier to put 4 or 5 revolving disks with the numbers 0-10 than it would be to break down by cups.

yeas, and thats the principle of metrics.

EDIT Btw this is measured in centigallons I guess...

It's cute that you think decimals are derived from the metric system. If you're too simple-minded to understand anything but whole units, perhaps you'd better stick to the metric system.

cute is, that you dont understand, that English Imperial is uncapable to measure parts of units in convinient and easily calculated way.
So you have to use decimals to split galon in hunders smaller units to easily show how much fuel you've bought. This is not a part if Imperial system.

Using English Imperial System would mean, that on your bill it should say 8 gallons 2 quarts 1 pint and 4 gills (didnt calculated it - units recalculation in Imperial in pain in the ass and im lazy).

So you have to adopt logic behind metric system to deal with shitty Imperial for everyday life.

But you will never admit this - you are a proud patriot, you are an American, so you are correct and we are idiots. Nice.

Main difference between US and rest of the world is, that most of the rest of the world know, that they make mistakes and they are ready to learn from others.
Many US guys i've met in US (9 months living there) were absulutelly sure, thet they are the best the best the best and the best. That they do not have to listen, do not have to learn from other and NEVER EVER admit, that something they use, is a piece of outdated shit.

well after nine months of daily dealing with Imperial crap, I can say, thay I hate English Imperial System and that it's really shitty crap.
And I have many US friends but found large group of empty heads having few things common - they dont think, they are "real christians" and they are proud patriots.

EDIT Simplicity od average US surfer is giving me the money - sell crap and shit to European surfer is much more complicated - they tend to use the brain much more...

DutchTeenCash 11-05-2006 04:04 AM

Or worse some adapt some wont, like in the UK where they still use half metric half imperial... or Italy that still had Lires instead of Euros in some parts and needed a court order to really get rid of the old Lires.

Let the US have their system, we cant all be the same.

The metric system has no advantages for me. Not one.

You are the one getting upset because everyone doesn't agree with you. I'm cool with countries being different.

Now I am going to get in my car that has a 350 cubic in. engine, drive 2 and a quarter miles, buy a 16 ounce cup of coffee and a newspaper and watch the sun rise.

Are you serious? You *DO* measure the size of an engine by how much liquid the cylinders hold. That's how the precision is made. You've never seen how an engine is finetuned? They take an exact amount of liquid and fill a cylinder..now if the 2nd 3rd and 4th etc cylinders hold the exact same amount of liquid they're the same size... I thought you were a motoring man.. You don't just put a ruler into a cylinder and measure how long it is...
