Well in the UK we have had the metric system for years - but all signage is in miles we measure height in feet and inches, weight in pounds and stones and so on. Even kids who are I suspect educated in the metric system still use feet, inches, miles etc

...and why not given we fucking invented the imperial system so props to the US and fuck the rest of the world:thumbsup

huey 11-03-2006 05:32 PM

We would never say 35/97th of a gallon, and the only reason anyone might be talking about 3.8 liter would be in reference to engine size, which is not measured in gallons.

Your statement is agenda driven because you hate this country, therefore causing you to blind yourself from fact because emotions are in your way.

In the 80's I believe we tried the metric out. That would have been a better time, now we are too big. So as Anthony said cost would be play a factor.

My answer would be, THE PEOPLE. If we decided to start using it businesses would change and start using it and viola. We control what WE want. Why do you think everyone comes HERE to make money? We left Europe, why would we want to be like the people we left behind? We left to get the hell away from them and formed this country, which is now filled with people from ALL OVER THE WORLD, because our way WORKS better and we have access to both because of that reason. And again, for anyone who said stupid, YOU ARE stupid. Understanding the metric system is the same as standard, our way. You have to remember the same numbers in a different way, and like I said before, the metric system is actually easier once understood. It's just a different measuring language. So your IQ wouldn't have anything to do with it. But the fact that YOU think WE should change to the way YOU like, and YOU think WE are stupid for not doing what YOU want, shows that you lack critical thinking skills BIG TIME. in any metric country, 98% of 2nd graders will be able to tell you and break down kilometer, meter, centemeter and so on.

Most americans dont even know how many f oz in a galon
or oz in a pound

this is the only time i'll ever system

That was quite a long rant...

The whole reason that the rest of the world thinks you guys are crazy for using the imperial system is that the metric system, as you pointed out, is easier.

So, after the trouble of introducing it, it saves children in schools quite a bit of effort, and makes sure that absolutely everyone is able to use it.

Try and convert 3.46 gallons to cubic inches. The answer is ~799.26.
Now, try to convert 3.46 liters to cubic centimeters. The answer is 3460.

The first conversion, for most people, would require either a pocket calculator or a minute or two. The second conversion, for most people, would require roughly two seconds.

We don't hate you Americans, we just think it is quite odd of you to prefer an illogical and relatively complex system over a logical and exceedingly simple one. Personally, I actually hope that you never start using the metric system. The imperial system is kinda funny and quirky, like those african women who use neckbands to stretch their necks, or Canadians eating regurgitated food (poutine).

Oh, but no, it is not "understanding the same numbers in a different way".
The metric system is the same for everything. A kilometer is 1000 meters, a kilogram is 1000 grams, a kilosecond is 1000 seconds, a kilojoule is 1000 joules, etc.
The imperial system, however, is not. A mile is 63300 inches, a US ton is 2000 lbs (and 32000 ounces), etc.
The quantities described may be the same, but the numbers used to describe them most definitely are not.

And finally, some funny shit to lighten up this thread:

There is also a starter motor on my bike . . . but that is the only one I can think of off-hand

That's funny.. Where did the Imperial System come from?

Businesses that export/import goods already have to deal with metric. So in fact in a lot of cases it's probably costing them more money.

Isn't the US military primarily metric? They'd pretty much have to be since all their colition partners are metric.

Because it is more logical. If you drive/ride/walk on the left anyone coming toward you is on your right side ie your strong side (given most are right handed) or in days of yore your sword hand was best suited to deal with anyone wishing you harm.

In fact everyone used to 'drive' on the left as far back as the Romans (ie carts. troops etc) but Napoleon imposed the 'right' side as the norm because it was 'revolutionary' (he also imposed the metric system) and was part of his unified Europe dream and dispensing with anything that he considered the 'old ways'.

some things aren't worth learning or adapting. Not wasting our time with that which is unworthy of our time, is what makes us so profitable. Let someone else waste time learning OUR language, our system of measure, we have other things to learn.:winkwink:
