It's nice to see there is still ridiculous amounts of money/stock being thrown around. It gives me hope for my mainstream ventures! I bet the paypal people cash their stock as soon as they are allowed to!

I would guess that this may mean no more adult.

I wouldnt be suprised if Paypals focus switches from being general purpose to really just serving ebay payments.

Ebay is militant about cancelling auctions that link to adult websites. They have been swayed to change their policies by social activists in the past and they have a corporate image to protect, a lot more so than just a payment processor does. I'm guessing that in the long run this won't be good news for adult sites using Pay Pal.

On top of all that, the price they paid seems very high during this shitty economy.

Good point. It may be worth considering not leaving too much money in there if they do decide to go the no more adult path.

I really doubt it. Paypal was embracing Adult as it needed to get profitable.

As part of Ebay that is no longer so urgent.

They are already starting to have problems with CC companies, so folding into Ebay could meant they really just focus on processing those transactions which are already well over 50% of their business.

I could be wrong, but only time will tell.

Also paypal is backed by Mastercard which I think is the 2nd largest credit company when it comes to adult transactions...
They are trying to build a monopoly of sorts,Time Warner which owns AOL(Americans most publicized ISP) also owns adult satelite channels and phone sex operations, they are as mainstream as it gets and nobody has a problem with them... I think whoever owns ebay and now paypal are trying to follow suit...sex sells and everybody knows it... what does joe blue collar want more,a Ted Williams baseball card off ebay or some barely legal teen pussy?...you make the call

Leave it to ebay to fuck up a good thing. Damn.

I hope they don't, but the odds are against us.

I used to make huge amounts of cash selling mainstream goods on ebay. They eventually changed their system so much, its almost impossible to make a decent profit on something as they fucking charge you up the ass to sell. Not to mention if someone fucks you on a payment, ebay makes you jump through hoops for about 2 months until they credit your 2.89. Now imagine that times a couple hundred listings if you work in volume. It fucking sucks.

I am very bitter towards ebay. I have no doubt they will fuck up paypal for sure.

I've said it before and i'll say it again

Paypal has no problem processing adult transactions
and the people i have spoken to there always recommend having your site reviewed so there will be no account holds.

they will be more than happy to take the time to review it

I just did a quick search and got this -

http://www.usatoday.com/money/tech/2...-22-paypal.htm

the problem is that Visa and Mastercard dont like agregators. For example, in Australia companies like CCBill can not exist due to the card company rules.

I believe CCbill/Ibill etc are already having to report chargeback ratios etc for each individual site and you will more than likely find that sites with high Charge Back ratios will get booted by the card schemes.

It is far more profitable for the card schemes to have lots of smaller merchants which they can slug with massive set-up fees, and higher discount rates directly.

Adult is a very SMALL % of there transactions.

It may be a big percentage of their Online/Net transactions but that does not translate into the physical world.

They wouldnt even notice it if they stopped processing the transactions.

Jayson

Most likely PayPal will phase out adult processing.
They have already indicated that they will end processing for gaming.

Ebay alone has more than enough room for Pay Pal to grow, with next to no competition. Given that competitive outlook, why would they bother with entrenched adult competitors? Not to mention the stigma.

The purchase was a good move by Ebay IMHO.
Billpoint, Ebay's paypal like service, never got any traction in the market place. I'm sure Ebay did not want to wait on Pay Pal failing before they purchased. Now Ebay can focus on correcting Pay Pal's image and customer support problems.

Ebay is probably under fire to transition merchants from accepting check and money order purchases to PayPal, so they can better insure tracking and fulfillment.

Just my

Up about 11% at midday, think people knew about this before hand?

Look at the climb from March to June. It pretty much doubled in value.

Billpoint will be phased out by eBay. I believe the only competitors are citi bank and hyper wallet. Great business move in my opinion.

I disagree. It was a good move from a business growing standpoint in that owning Pay Pal broadens their horizons but I think they overpaid. E-Bay has one of the most rock solid names in internet biz. Not to mention they also have one of the most recognizable names too. All E-Bay really had to do was revamp Billpoint and cross brand it with the E-Bay reputation and they could have created a huge competitor in no time for less than 100 mil. A couple of Pay Pals marketing guys could have done that for them.

eBay Chief Financial Officer Rajiv Dutta said eBay will discontinue PayPal's online gaming business, which was expected to account for 10 percent to 15 percent of total revenue in fiscal 2003. Dutta said the move is due to the "uncertain legal situation" around online gaming. Citibank recently said it would stop allowing its credit cards to be used for online gambling, and a bill is currently pending in Congress that would ban online gambling.

I'll stand by what I said, even though you've quoted me wrong, I said that they wouldn't be around in their current form -- which of course could mean I was right in just 24 hours ;)

Doesn't really matter who owns Paypal, they still have alot of hurdles in front of them. Most of them credit card related, but sooner than not, of a regulatory nature...

I'm with you, Cherry. It's way to crowded out there now to make the kind of bank we used to. eBay should have bought PayPal last year instead of crying about how many more people used 'em instead of their shitty Bilkpoint Service.

The problem is I don't think there are any other online payment services out there that can step up to the plate without giving away $10 just for signing up. Damn, that was the SHIT! I made some fat cash just for having my ref codes in my auctions

It's worth a lot, it just doesn't affect the bottom line at the moment. Swapping stock isn't like playing with Monopoly money. It's real. Depending on how long they have to hold those stocks before they can sell them determines how much the deal will ultimately be worth to Pay Pal but don't think for a second it isn't real money & voting power inside of the company. What was Pierre thinking!?

Nevertheless, $1.5G in stock does not equal $1.5G in cash.
