:mad U.S. Military Blocks Troops From Visiting Alternative News Websites

U.S. Military Blocks Troops From Visiting Alternative News Websites

Wonkette | October 27 2006

We realize that when it comes to freedom of the press, the USA has fallen to Number 53 in the world ? tied with our fascist homies in Croatia and the islanders of the Kingdom of Tonga! ? but do we have to make is so damned obvious?

Another Marine stationed in Iraq has sent us a screenshot of what happens when you need some hot news on Macaca and Foley:forbidden, this page (http://www.wonkette.com) is categorized as (Personal Pages) ALL SITES YOU VISIT ARE LOGGED AND FILED.Nice little threat at the end, too. Asswipes.
Notice the other browser tabs. Two actual ?personal pages? that rah-rah for Bush (What's her name, the wannabe Coulter, and Hugh Hewitt) show up just fine, as our Marine Operative confirms. But ?Talking Points Memo,? which is apparently one of the ?left leaning? sites one hears so much about these days, is prohibited.

Writes the Corporal: ?I think that this kind of censoring is a big deal. I can understand blocking porn, music and movies, and blatantly illegal sites, but blocking sites that some higher up just doesn't agree with is disgusting. They are blocking a huge portion of voters from information that will help them determine which side to vote for. Because of this, the only news we get is from the big corporations or conservative based sites.?

you mean they don't want to demoralize a fighting force where the direct consequence is higher casualities?

why would the military have such a policy?

crazy shit.

just don't make no sense.

Our government demorzlizes the troops, not the media. If they don't want to demoralize the troops, give them the proper tools, resources, and strategies to win. Also don't put them into shitholes like Iraq.

So you support keeping citizens in a fantasy world instead of reality?

you are confusing military policies (which exist for what any low functioning moron can understand is for obvious reasons) with congressional approved spending.

nice that you threw "citizens" in there to make a broader argument as if that has anything to do with the exact topic of what a soldier, on the ground, in a war can see on the internet.

well, i was in the military. if in fact it was a government owned computer and or router/network/whatever, then they can and will do whatever they want. in the case of the soldier in question, the government owns you, literally. i once almost got an article 15 (courts martial) because i got a severe sunburn. they were going to charge me with Destruction of Government Property. once you sign that contract, you are essentially a piece of meat to them, you are not free, you cannot go and come as you please. you are government property. they can and do control the things you watch, and view any way they like. there are no laws broken and the constitution has nothing to do with it. they are not violating anyones rights. its pretty shitty what they are doing, but they do have the right to do it.

Who determines the military policies that say Fox News is acceptable but an anti-war site isn't? It seems to me that the policy is to hide the truth from soldiers.

I just find it hypocritical that we trash countries like China, Russia, and virtually every Middle East country for government controlled media. Then we send some soldiers to fight for that freedom for others but don't even give them that freedom that they are fighting for.

I'm not arguing that they don't have the right to do it. I just find it funny that they want these soldiers to fight for freedoms that they aren't even given.

they are property. they are tools. thats all. nothing more. they have a serial number and their life isn't their own. from a military standpoint, you want a motivated, agressive and gung ho fighting force thats ready to do anything they are told without question. do you guys understand war? understand that people are trying to kill them 24hrs a day?

hypocrisy has nothing to do with it. they are pieces of military hardware... not private chinese citizens sitting in their homes with their families in Bejing being told what to think.

Most civilians that never served think this way but it's true. We served to fight for freedoms that our friends and family enjoy.... its a selfless cause.

They have the right to vote. Therefore, they should have balanced access to news sources.

Were you ever in the military?

When I graduated A School in Ft Devens, Colonel Troth gave a great speech. Some of his words I still remember.

"You are the few that protect our country's freedom. You, as sailors, marines, airmen, and soldiers, willingly give away some of your freedoms to protect those of American Citizens."

I don't know why they'd block Wonkette. It's a satire site, nothing anyone would really take seriously.

That isn't totally true. The media has HUGE control over people. Don't you see all of the people bitching about Fox News "brainwashing" people daily right here on GFY?

The media has the power to influence just about anything, its really sort of sad if you ask me. During a low-point of WWII, one extremely famous photo lifted the spirits of an alliance of troops and gave them the encouragement they needed to overcome the battles ahead and in time, win. All from the media.

Yea, it's kinda weird blocking porn and new sites.. most military people don't much care for left wing ideas in regards to war and politics anyways.. and i'm sure that soldiers in Iraq have a better idea whats going on then we do here in north america..

Anyone hear about the dutch talking about sending whores along with soldiers to prevent spread of genes? kinda weird..

I agree in some sense. But I don't see us losing a war because some soldiers were able to access The Onion.

I was commenting more on the power of the media than anything.

I have always very strongly believed that people can do amazing things when given the proper encouragement and nudge. I don't think this is a time to be discouraging our men when that discouragement can lead to lack of action, which will in turn lead to more deaths.

I'll let the militia leaders and Muslim clerics worry about their men. I care about the guys I grew up with watching football and going to concerts much more. :-)

I wish we had more of the unity that our country showed in WWII.

Liberating Iraq is really no different than liberating Europe.

i agree morale can be affected by bad news from the homefront

but how is it that porn affects morale?

maybe they want people sexually frustrated/pissed off & ready to kill?

A major factor is the basis for the "Iraq war" - it was false. Same with the Vietnam war (Gulf of Tonkin) and a list of other adventures into the real world. Propaganda and contrived false flag scenarios don't work when folks can see thru them - they bounce back and cover faces in shit.

If a war is justifiable, it is recognized as that and rarely a problem with unity.

We aren't talking about how much a webmaster makes, so you don't have to inflate the numbers. LOL

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/

Civilians reported killed by military intervention in Iraq
Min Max
44741 49697

This number is a mix of both sides.
