The Rolling Stone Magazines 10 Greatest Songs Of All Time

what do you think? there is reason behind the decisions

teen spirit was the catalyst for the changover from rock to alternative in the early 90s, Good Vibrations used a theremin instrument, came out with a revolutionary sound and was very technologically advanced, johnny b good was the universal anthem of rock and roll, etc

001 - Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone
002 - Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
003 - John Lennon - Imagine
004 - Marvin Gaye - Whats Going On
005 - Aretha Franklin - Respect
006 - The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
007 - Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode
008 - The Beatles - Hey Jude
009 - Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
010 - Ray Charles - What'd I Say Parts I & II

So give us a list of the best 10 from the last 10 years. Assuming you can remember any of them.

The BIG difference today is the way most pop and rock songs are marketed. Back in the 50/60/70s the way to get it sold was via the radio. The song had to be good to get it played, or popular at that moment.

Today it's about the videos on MTV. Yes the pop videos of today are some of the ever, the songs are not.

Add to this the way bands rose in the early days and the way they rise now and you can see why the MUSIC of today is of a lower quality than it was in the 60s. The Beatles had been playing in clubs and pubs for years before they made. Today a band is over and gone in the time it used to take for them to learn their trade. Writing, singing and performing music.

i'm as old as some of the editors, but my first thought when i read that list was "damn, all but one of these songs are old!"

if we're going for old, i'm thinking these songs were groundbreaking, influencial and complex yet accessible:

*stairway to heaven
*layla
*dream on

if we're going for beatles, why not something that stood out more from their body of work? maybe day in the life or happiness is a warm gun.

that top 500 seems to have a lot of not only oldies but classic rock on the highest listings. it looks like the entire top 100 was written by one person or a group of people with extremely similar tastes - mostly people over 50.

while teen spirit is not my favorite grunge or nirvana song, it changed how music sounded, it's catchy and well crafted. don't know that it needs to be in the top ten, though. of course on my PERSONAL list, if including nirvana, i'd have to go for negative creep or breed - but that's just me.

It's probably a reasonable list based on the influence of the songs, but even then I'm not sure. Historical significance is often lost on those of us who weren't around to see the changes the songs supposedly made.

Most, if not all of these records, would not get released or even made these days. Record labels have gone from developing artists and building an audience to finding someone that looks good and can make a catchy song. As a side note I know that Bob Dylans son Jacob and his band The Wallflowers' first record sold more copies than any Bob Dylan record ever has.

i think they just threw in "smells like... " just to have something modern in the list. i most certainly believe that slot should have been taken by "a day in the the life" by the beatles

I think Nirvana legitimately deserves to be on that list. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' took us from bands like Warrant and Winger to Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, STP, nearly overnight.

Nirvana was good but no way in hell do they deserve to be in the top 10. I grew up with them as they were my generation, and I can honestly say that they wouldn't have been half as popular had Kurt Cobain lived. Where the hell are GNR, and Van Halen? Metallica.. Give me a break

After Nevermind was released and Kurt was still alive Nirvana was the biggest band in the world. They did get bigger for a minute after his death, but they were huge long before he killed himself.

What makes them a top 10 band is the influence they cast. For years after they came out ( and still today ) bands try to sound like them. Nirvana single handedly ended the careers of poison, motley crue, warrent, ratt, and and number of hair metal bands.

The 500 list has a lot of cool songs on it. But I don't buy into the list because they had the arrogance to put Dylan, Rolling stone at number one. That is gay.

Paul Markham. You need to wake up.

Music was not so much better back in the 60's because people took time learning their trade in smoke filled clubs. Pretty retarded you think that way. I guess thats why your pictures are stuck in 1980.

Times move. Still plenty of talented people making music now. To think life started and ended in the 60's is stupid.

Agreed. There also should be something from southern rock like the Eagles, Allman Brothers, Lynerd Skynerd, ZZ Top or Lowell George.

No Tom Petty, Bruce Sprigsteen, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, Velvet Underground, U2, GNR.

And the 50's really got omitted. No Elvis, Buddy Holly or Jerry Lee Lewis. At least Chuck Berry made the list.

But, there's only 10 spots.

it's a decent list - i despise Hey Jude though personally. obviously there are probably another couple of hundred songs that wouldn't be out of place on that list either.

those things are so biased. there's no possible way you can rank the top 10 songs of all time. Different music means different things to different people.

btw, if you do a search for some of these songs in wikipedia, it explains the significance:

"Like a Rolling Stone" is a song by Bob Dylan from his album Highway 61 Revisited. First issued in 1965, it represents, in its length (6:09), style, and scoring, one of the most influential of Dylan's songs. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it as the greatest song of all time, and declared, "No other pop song has so thoroughly challenged and transformed the commercial laws and artistic conventions of its time." It is regarded by many as amongst the greatest popular music songs of all time.
