This is a bit off topic, but here is my theory on how Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace got, and are able to keep, their jobs...
CNN is desperate to keep pace with Fox News, so they need news personalities who are very opinionated. But they don't want to be blatantly biased like Fox is - the one strength CNN has is it is reasonably "balanced" in the sense that it isn't too far one way or the other to the right or the left. These news personalities also need to appeal to the widest possible audience. So the challenge facing executive producers at CNN is what kind of person fits that bill. The answer is the village idiot. Think about it... the village idiot is the only person in town who has strong opinions, but can't be labelled as consistantly biased to the right or left (because they are all over the place all the time), and their reasoning is so simple that everyone can understand it. And voila Glenn Beck and Nancy Grace have careers. |
