****Strange sound from computer - DESPERATE PLEA FOR HELP**** <- please read

Hi,

This is my last resort. I am writing this in the hope that one of you knows the source of my pain.

About 4 years ago I noticed my PC every 10 or so minutes made a "swissh, swisssh" sound with the swishes being about 1 second apart and the first one always being louder than the second.

At first I thought it was hardware, then I discovered it was coming out of my speakers.

This lead me to believe it was most likely to be spyware or adware with a little sound byte just to piss ppl off.

I discovered it happening on my notebook at the time and then found my desktop doing it too. I always had up to date virus software.

Since that time 4 years ago I have had this F*&ing noise find it's way on to EVERY system I have used. After talking to colleagues in my physical office I discovered they all had it too!!!

Today it found its way on to my 3 week old brand new system with windowsdefender and McAfee security sweet installed.

I have searched google for hours (how do you search for a sound) to no avail. I have even listened to 1000s of .wav files on my machine trying to find it.

Have any of you noticed a soft "double swish" type sound at irregular intervals from your system's speakers? If so - WHAT IS IT?

Cheers for any info - I might even shoot a cash reward to the person that finds out what it is.

Sounds like you might have some rf noise in your power lines somewhere. Doubtful its a virus. Might try a good heavy duty surge protector.

...what sticky said.

Cell phones, bad power, etc, can all cause this, and often do. Get a "Power Conditioner" in line, and see if this fixes it.

Are you sure it is not the cooling fan turning on when it gets hot? mine does all the time and kind of sounds like that it is coming from speakers but isn't.

Maybe try mute your computer and see if it still does it?

No - this is definately a sound from my sound card & Speakers. If I have my volume up - it is loud. If i have my volume down it is soft.

It is also ALWAYS exactly the same sound. If my speakers or headphones are off - it doesnt occur.

The plot thickens.

I am going to try and grab a recording of it.

Here is the recording.

Ok it's not ideal as a) I was typing just as it started and b) I had my volume up FULL so it sounds much louder than it would normally.

Listen here:
http://www.newbienudes.com/images/mystery_sound.wav

Before anyone asks it isnt a mouse click noise or an IE noise. It is random and will happen even if I am doing nothing on my PC.

RF interference or voltage irregularities often times are detectable through feedback noise in your speakers.

This doesnt explain why I have heard it probably on more than 20 machines over 4 years and in all different locations, even on laptops running purely on battery. IT IS AN AUDIO FILE - I have absolutely no doubt about that.

lmao... that's the search sound that occurs when you leave the search window open for a while. It's the little search pooch scratching itself I think.

sounds weird...
- run a search on your pc for all soundfiles
- copy all of them to new folder
- delete from that new folder every sound file you are sure is not related (songs and stuff)
- listen to one after the other... until you find the one...
- search for that file and give us it's name and location...

HE IS RIGHT!!!!

I just found out that from friend thru trilllain - but GFY comes up with the answer AGAIN!!!

If you do a windows search - and leave the window open the little dog prick scratches himself and wags his tail intermittently!

FUCK!! I AM SAVED.

If you want to see him do it - just go START / SEARCH and then right click the little bastard.

Hallelujah!!!

AFTER 4 YEARS I AM SAVED!!!

Thanks to all those that cared.

:D

Took them 4 years to notice the 'scratching' sound that the dog makes. It's really an annoying sound.
