there are so many windows programs I use though, dont you run into problems not being able to run certain software

Ah well, I wonder if I could get the damn thing to work on my laptop. What I need to do is get my new laptop and use that as my primary lappy, then I can format this one and use it as a test bed.

Until you start looking for alternatives, you think you are stuck with Windows.

Also, WINE lets you run many Windows apps under Ubuntu... I had Photoshop 7 running smoothly in Ubuntu.

Fucking cool!

(Still use a PC though for primary work... and Mac OS X for graphic design)

Since you're a KDE fan, give PCBSD a look too. It is based on FreeBSD 6.X, has a stupid simple installation and a growing list of 1 click installation programs (PBIs).

Xubuntu is better. Gnome is slow as shit, xfwm is better :D

Laptops can be tricky sometimes, since hardware manufacturers like to make undocumented changes to hardware when they shrink it down to fit in the small form factor. Sleep/Wake issues are usually the biggest headache.

The issue I had with Ubuntu is getting my wireless connection to work....didn't work at all and it looks like many people have the same issue. I got back to windows because of that, never had problems with it anyway.

Installed the full version of Ubuntu 6.06LTS on a Dell Latitude CPx J650GT without any problems at all, and Linux actually made me realize that this old lappy has alot of life yet in it!

What wireless card / USB dongle are you using?

I too had alot of problems initially with my wireless, but I got it sorted, and the fix was so simple it was crazy!!

CS2 was running like shit for me, weird font issues even though I had the fonts installed properly lol. I wanted to play StarCraft under wine but that didn't work to well :D

Once you successfully port one program using WINE, the rest come pretty easy!
You just need to understand what WINE is and how it makes programs work.

I spent maybe 5 hours total to get all the programs I need working in Ubuntu

If you want a down and dirty way to get windows programs working under WINE, go to google or yahoo and search for "portable {program name}"

A great many common Win32 applications have been made to work on USB thumbdrives ... and this is the same basic functionality you need to get ANY Win32 program to run in Linux
