Ah well, I wonder if I could get the damn thing to work on my laptop. What I need to do is get my new laptop and use that as my primary lappy, then I can format this one and use it as a test bed.

I've been tempted to give it a try, but I'm kind of concerned about the lack of software, HTML editors, Photo editors, etc. Any useful links?

Until you start looking for alternatives, you think you are stuck with Windows.
Also, WINE lets you run many Windows apps under Ubuntu... I had Photoshop 7 running smoothly in Ubuntu. Fucking cool! (Still use a PC though for primary work... and Mac OS X for graphic design)

I got it on a spare box, looks groovey but I'm more of a KDE fan so I have to go burn an install of kbuntu and check that out...

Never liked and Linux packages when I tried it out. Plus Windows works just fine for me, so I see no real reason to change.

Has anyone installed it on a laptop? If so, did it recognize everything driver wise?

http://www.linux-laptop.net/ This site is invaluble for anyone trying to install any flavor of linux on a laptop. It is basically compilations of user install experiences of linux on various laptop models. You can usually find stories about your laptop model, and find out exactly what works and what doesnt, and how much of a pain in the ass its going to be. Laptops can be tricky sometimes, since hardware manufacturers like to make undocumented changes to hardware when they shrink it down to fit in the small form factor. Sleep/Wake issues are usually the biggest headache.

The issue I had with Ubuntu is getting my wireless connection to work....didn't work at all and it looks like many people have the same issue. I got back to windows because of that, never had problems with it anyway.

You just need to understand what WINE is and how it makes programs work. I spent maybe 5 hours total to get all the programs I need working in Ubuntu If you want a down and dirty way to get windows programs working under WINE, go to google or yahoo and search for "portable {program name}" A great many common Win32 applications have been made to work on USB thumbdrives ... and this is the same basic functionality you need to get ANY Win32 program to run in Linux |
