How long is a piece of string?

It depends man.

You can spend $100 or $10,000 on a bike.

What's your budget and what sort MTBing do you want to do? Dirt jumps? Downhill? Freeriding? XC?

I do.. but I have nothing fancy.. for it will get trashed on the mountains around here. You will have to make a choice of a bike with "shocks" or one without.. I prefer the one without.. I dont like all the bounce.

I haven't tried mountain biking yet, and never really had plans of getting into it.

There is no reason to have a full suspension bike if you are ony riding normal roads. Too much power will be lost in the suspension.

If you want to go a little off road you shod get a hard tail front suspension bike.

Dont buy the cheapest bike. It will brake to quicky - especially if you ride it a little hard.

Depends on how you want to use it.. Downhill only? Regular mountainbike? Are you going to use it often and hardcore, or just every once in a while for a nice ride..

Gary Fisher, Cannondale or Klein, with Shimano XTR or XT on it.. that's the best of the best imho.. but if you settle with 'less', LX is also very good, and cheaper..
