Intel vs AMD in real world tests...

A friend of mine asked me why I bought an AMD 64x2 Dual core when Intel makes a far superior product.

Here is why:

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10442_7-6389077-1.html

To make it simple, AMD offered to test their processors against Intel and Intel said, no thanks... So CNET decided to do the testing anyway...

Appication Performance? AMD
Gaming? AMD (32% faster)
Multitasking? AMD
Photo Editing? AMD
MP3 Encoding? AMD
Video Encoding? AMD
Price vs Performance? Overwhelmingly AMD

AMD is like Nasty Dollars, you should join them....

Too bad that article is almost a year old. The new generation of Intel's (Core Duo's) absolutely pound AMD.

the $230 intel e6400 beats the $825 amdfx62 in most tests, and the top line extreme edition intel more than doubles the performance in a lot of tests.

amd for the past few years have always beaten intel in most things, especially gaming, but with core 2 duo the tables have turned.

additionally, intel say they will have sold over 1 million of their new 4 core desktop cpu's before amd have even sold one. and in things like video encoding and other threaded applications the performance of the four core cpu is double that of the core 2 duo's equivalent..

The E6600 is the best chip period in terms of performance vs. price ratio. It kills AMD's flagship products in nearly every application. And with Intel Quad core chips literally right around the corner, AMD has a lot of ground to make up.

That's no longer true. The 5100-series Xeon processors and 6000-series "p4"-processors both kick AMD's ass..

I just red a lot about processors as I had to buy a new machine for video editing, and I ended up with 5100-series dual dualcore-xeon's.. AMD was superior prior to the new intels..no more.

What I love about that article is they show a huge AMD chip pic and a tiny Intel one. Subliminal advertising. Bigger is better.

Just wait till Intel gets out there quad core processors later this year and you'll see AMD really get blown away in processing power.

I agree with a lot of what you say... you are a very insightful person Of course I disagree on most issues though

As for AMD I *love* amd, from my first K6-2 to my all time favorite chip of all time, a t-bird 1400. It finally gave out about two months ago, ran for about 4 years total overclocked the entire time. What a great piece of tech it was! What intel has done this round is the absolute BEST thing that could have happened to AMD. AMD has been sitting on their laurels and have had such an uppity attitude with their great price-to-performance ratio? this great shaming by intel (and further shaming when the quad-cores come later this year) hopefully will put them into high gear.

Can?t wait to see what they pull out in 07? ;)

Still have a tbird in my daughters computer. It was a solid chip for sure. Think its a 1200. Think used to overclock like a champ. Amazing what a bit of pencil graphite can do hehe.

Sorry bro. No longer true. Here is a recent article/test that shows Intel whooping AMD's ass. I just bought a Dual Core Extreme machine for video editing and encoding and it is faster than any other machine that I used in the past (exclusing workstation class boxes with Xeon's).

I hate intel but I will admit there new processors scream over AMD's. Yet if you think about it, it took them 4 years to do it. I know AMD is already working on something much more kick ass and I have a inside source saying within two years AMD is releashing the 128 BIT processor, so we shall see.

All the AMD fanboys need to check out the new intel conroes. They're currently kicking serious ass over their amd brothers... and is alot more affordable than the amd counterparts. Although im sure this will only last till Q3/4 2007 it's nice to see intel ahead for once.

That's the way it's been since the athlon came out. Saying one company is better than the other is fucking dumb. It all depends on which company has the best performing cpu currently.

Ummm look at the date on the article...November 2005 lol.

The new Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's are faster than anything AMD has. We use an overclocked X6800 for video rendering and it is the fastest thing we have..Faster than the Mac Pro.

Take a look at an evaluation of the new cpu's:

That article is about a year old and is no longer true. The latest releases from Intel actually beat AMD. Of course that will change a year from now but right now don't be bull shitting people. Get up to date information so you know what you're talking about.

Yes, I'm posting this on my AMD that I purchased last year because it was the fastest. If I make a purchase this year it will be Intel.

Yupp, slowest new Core Duo beats the 2-3 times more expensive FX65 (or whatever its called). I am surprised to see it, but Intel is back on top.

AMD has the K8L and 4x4 coming out in 2007. It's good there's better compition between them now though, will lead to better cpu's and prices in the future. The whole P4 architecture was crap from the beginning. No idea why Intel ran with that for so long.

You have an inside source saying AMD is releasing a 128bit processor within two years huh? Please, oh mighty split_joel do tell us just what the fuck Joe Desktop, or even Joe Server are going to do with 128 bit registers in the next two or four or even ten years. Do you even know what a register is?

To make it simple, AMD offered to test their processors against Intel and Intel said, no thanks... So CNET decided to do the testing anyway...

Appication Performance? AMD
Gaming? AMD (32% faster)
Multitasking? AMD
Photo Editing? AMD
MP3 Encoding? AMD
Video Encoding? AMD
Price vs Performance? Overwhelmingly AMD

AMD is like Nasty Dollars, you should join them....
This review was done in 2005....BEFORE.. the new Core 2 Duo was introduced. Although I have been an AMD guy, I think the balance has shifted to Intel for the moment...

Toms hardware is showing Intels latest chip against AMDs... But AMD has not put out a chip that competes with Intels. When they do, it will out perform Intels... and that is my point. I am not going to spend $1300 on a chip since I don't do video editing... And when AMD comes out with a like mannered chip it will kick ass and cost me $600.

e6600 is 319.00 and real close to the fastest chip out there.
