A question regarding all the recent school shootings

With all the recent shootings in schools, do you think that teachers/principals should be able to carry weapons to deter possible shootings?

What if the teachers who were allowed to carry them had to be certified and pass some sort of psychological evaluation/background check similar to Police officers?

Teachers are already didling their students. Not to mention the teachers unions would never go for something like that.

I also do not think that the kids would get the guns from the teachers or principles, etc. However I do know that I would of never made it as a kid if my principle and or a few teachers had guns. I pushed some of them pretty far. I would be almost certain to have had a few caps busted in my ass at some point.

Then you have this whole issue of the teachers/principles/guards whatever having to be in right place, right time. Or if not trying some die hard bad approach instead of letting the pro's deal with it. Or hell, shooters would just adjust and go back to snipper style shootings at schools.

When I think back to some of the morons that taught me in school, I'd have to vote no.

Being a teacher or a principal is hard enough and involves enough abuse and stress without also having to be somebody that controls an arsenal. People better be ready to pay more taxes to pay them more money if that sort of extra and extreme responsibility on their shoulders.

I'm undecided on the whole issue, I think each side has its pros and cons. Here is an article (a few years old) but has some interesting facts about other countries who are arming their teachers.

http://www.nationalreview.com/kopel/...0409022215.asp

Sorry, the article is a little too long to paste

GREAT IDEA!

Just make sure legislation is past allowing teachers to only shoot students with hollow-points ... this will prevent bullets from passing thru the troublemaker into an innocent student that is studying his multiplication tables.

Schools are natural sitting duck targets. Security is usually non-existent, minimal or very lax even when present. Campuses are not secured well and anyone can typically gain easy access and be cruising around with no ID system for others to recognize they shouldn't be there.

So the problem is a security issue. You need vastly better containment fencing controls, security guards should be posted at the primary entrances, roving patrols on campus, picture ID's should be worn by students and teachers to identify everyone walking around, and enhanced emergency scenario training for all teachers and students.

Besides shooting situations, schools are vulnerable to abductors and pervs just as much.

It's really sad politically, that the protection of our kids, the most precious things in our life are given such low priority, especially since you are mandated by law to hand over control and proection of your children to schools for 8 hours a day. Probably comes down to a money issue since schools already scrape for every dollar they can in county budgets.

This sad stuff will not stop because no one is doing anything to change the way things are done at schools and you've got more and more nut jobs out there all the time.

Those are some very valid points...you would think that all the recent shootings would bring these points to life

Why?
They would much more likely get killed on the way to school, than actually in a school.

This is so true. I remember the first day I dropped my kid off at kindergarten years ago. It's a very traumatic and frightening experience for a parent because after being in control of your kid for so many years all of a sudden you are forced to give them up to a bunch of total strangers you don't even know anything about. As I was driving away I never felt as vulnerable with such a sense of helpless panic.

Will they be harsh with your child? Yell at your child? Be mean to and intimidate your child? Hit your child? Are any of the teachers closet pedo's? Are any pervs or freaks? Will they watch your child carefully?

It's totally insane and unjust the way parent's are forced by the system to be fucking sheep and not be given any background info on the teachers and others your kids will be turned over to all day long.

sadly we have reached the point where schools need to be treated as airports with metal detectors and police at every door - the answer will lie in homeschooling through virtual classrooms

Kind of weird that most of the shootings that occur aren't in the inner-city schools where the metal detectors and police presence is high.

Arm adults against children? Something is truly messed up with that suggestion.

The children need to be in an environment where they feel safe, where they feel they belong and where they feel protected by peers and accepted. If a school can provide that, then the kids would have no reason to feel they need to bring weaponry to school to attack or have defense against their peers and/or teachers.

Those are some very valid points but it's not just arming them against students. It would also deter cases like today where crazed adult gunmen decide they want to take out their "my uncle touched my balls when I was little" aggression on innocent children.

we don't need guns.
we need head shrinkers to sort out the fruits and nuts BEFORE they do something.
in every case these people were looney tunes for years and nothing was done about it.

Weirdos can show up anywhere from post offices to grocery stores to schools. You can't lock every public building down because a weirdo might show up.

Not really. if you were gonna take a school at gunpoint, would you choose one that has little chance of the students have weapons and fighting back, or would you pick one where they'll gat yo ass without blinking and then write a rap song about you?

That's exactly what I was implying. If someone was going to pick a school to target, it would more likely be one in some podunk town where the security is very minimal.
