:stop how bad does rackshack suck?

their $99 for a 400gb dedicated deal aint too bad. are they so shitty its not worth it? i've heard theyre pretty incompetent but i could do all of own support on the box itself. what was your experience?

also, do you know any other hosts offering a comperable deal?

I use RackShack servers. I do everything myself. They are PHENOMINAL. But seriously, if I knew nothing about running my own server, I would have been BELLY UP a long time ago.

Don't even count on someone else to do it for you. If you cant do it, dont get it. If you can... you will be happier than any other host out there.

One of the best deals on the Net, but you do have to be able to look after your box yourself. That means knowing both Linux and Apache administration or having a really good friend (the kind that doesn't mind a 3AM call for help!) that does.

However, there are plenty of free on-line tutorials and manuals out there if one is willing to learn and has the aptitude for it. And you don't need to be an expert on the subjects, either- an intermediate understanding is all that's required for 99% of anything that may come up. If the box is initially configured right, you'll find it's pretty robust so it might be wise to pay for the set up and any additions or changes as you go along- you'd still come out ahead. Just be sure you have a plan for that 3AM emergency before it happens, it will sooner or later...

Their supplied server interfaces, like Plesk, Ensim and Cobalt SysAdmin, are adequate, but I've found Webmin (free from www.webmin.com) to be best for fine tuning things. Plus the documentation for it is almost enough to get one started in itself! Joe Cooper's "System Administration With Webmin" at http://www.swelltech.com/support/web...de/index.html, for example, is highly recommended for anyone thinking of being their own sysadmin, even if you're not using that specific interface. It covers the config files in depth.

To save a few bucks you need to be a fucking expert on keeping your server up?

What a piece of shit, I'm in the business to sell memberships not fiddle with apache & whatnot.
rackshack sounds like trouble,
my advise - stay away from them.

Simply too many hosts to choose from, there is no reason to setup with a company like that.

It's not a matter of saving a few bucks for some of us, LoveAsianChicks. Some of us actually approach webmastering as a craft. One can put up a FrontPage web site without even learning HTML, for that matter.

I'm not knocking those that choose to go that route, I'll just say that true magic is possible when one has a handle on the machine. The few bucks saved do add up, but are beside the point. Being able to control your own server has advantages that can't even be explained to those that haven't been there.

RackShack isn't for anybody, but if someone prepares themselves properly, it's a good place to drop the training wheels...

doing all of the sysadmin is no problem for me, was more concerned about hardware failures, network outtages, their response times to those types of emergencies, etc. can anyone name some hosts running on rackshack i could check latency on, etc?

i've heard a lot about hardware problems with them, i also read a few horror stories in their forums, might not be a bad place to read up before making the decision to use them, of course, that would take away from reading GFY , decisions decisions
