It only matter how important is to suck the information from the suspect . and it might sound harsh , but imagine this situation : a terror group threats amsterdam with nuclear attack unless they all convert to some other religion , and you have a suspect that might tell you the location of the bomb. Would you then turture him in order to save the lives of your million fellow residents in the netherlands or not ?
I gave such extreme example not because i think it may happen one day , but to demostrate you that sometime in life you dont really have a simple choice , and sometimes you have to negociate your own values in order to survive .

In U.S matter i think it's not justified to treat suspects this way while waving the 'war on terror' flag , unless the situation might save many other lives , so then again - there is no simple answer for that .
