This thinking is exactly why many European countries are now being run by the Middle East. One day you will wake up.

I'd get the hell out of the US and not step foot in it again unless your a citizen (well, until this law applies to citizens too, or you're a US citizn who likes to give charitable donations to Islamic and Muslim organizations).

Quote:

Included in the bill, passed by Republican majorities in the Senate yesterday and the House on Wednesday, are unique rules that bar terrorism suspects from challenging their detention or treatment through traditional habeas corpus petitions. They allow prosecutors, under certain conditions, to use evidence collected through hearsay or coercion to seek criminal convictions.

The bill rejects the right to a speedy trial and limits the traditional right to self-representation by requiring that defendants accept military defense attorneys. Panels of military officers need not reach unanimous agreement to win convictions, except in death penalty cases, and appeals must go through a second military panel before reaching a federal civilian court.

By writing into law for the first time the definition of an "unlawful enemy combatant," the bill empowers the executive branch to detain indefinitely anyone it determines to have "purposefully and materially" supported anti-U.S. hostilities. Only foreign nationals among those detainees can be tried by the military commissions, as they are known, and sentenced to decades in jail or put to death.

At the same time, the bill immunizes U.S. officials from prosecution for cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment of detainees who the military and the CIA captured before the end of last year. It gives the president a dominant but not exclusive role in setting the rules for future interrogations of terrorism suspects.

THAT IS THE problem....

It only matter how important is to suck the information from the suspect . and it might sound harsh , but imagine this situation : a terror group threats amsterdam with nuclear attack unless they all convert to some other religion , and you have a suspect that might tell you the location of the bomb. Would you then turture him in order to save the lives of your million fellow residents in the netherlands or not ?
I gave such extreme example not because i think it may happen one day , but to demostrate you that sometime in life you dont really have a simple choice , and sometimes you have to negociate your own values in order to survive .

In U.S matter i think it's not justified to treat suspects this way while waving the 'war on terror' flag , unless the situation might save many other lives , so then again - there is no simple answer for that .

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 — When the United States sent Maher Arar to Syria, where he was tortured for months, the deportation order stated unequivocally that Mr. Arar, a Canadian software engineer, was a member of Al Qaeda. But a few days earlier, Canadian investigators had told the F.B.I. that they had not been able to link him to the terrorist group.

Come'on. That's just fucked up. Dude was flying home to Canada, nabbed in the US and flown to Syria without any due process.
Fucked up.

Don't insult Arnold ... by comparing to Bush ....:2 cents:

Please stop using the word "Freedom" to defend the current administration's actions.

It's nothing but branding, no more substantive than "Coke adds life" or "I'm Lovin' It" or doubting that W. doesn't know how to pronounce, "Nuclear."

Whether you view this bill, and many of this admin's actions since 9/11, as prudent or troubling--and we can all watch our polarized citizens debate this point until November ad nauseum--they're not about freedom, they're about national security. And if you want the most secure society possible, you must be willing to sacrifice freedoms and liberties.

Bottom Line: Some of us think these sacrifices are warranted; Some of us do not.

kenny 09-29-2006 12:28 PM

There is worse conditions in civilian prisons both domestic and foreign.

The only reason why people are crying about this so called 'torture' is because it's receiving so much attention

gooddomains 09-29-2006 12:31 PM

we need more peace

That solves the torture issue ... and as torture goes we are on the "discomfort" side of the scale.

Illegal combatants aren't uniformed enemy soliders or civilians.

For example spies can be executed on the battlefield without breaking Geneva convention.

GrouchyAdmin 09-29-2006 12:42 PM

Holy shit, someone just tried to kill me - and now I get to turn up the AC and rattle the bars to disturb his rest? SOMEBODY CALL PETA!

GrouchyAdmin 09-29-2006 12:51 PM

Just for clarification - I've had it worse when I was paying for the right of such things - they're called roommates..

I won't call you a complete moron just because youre in south america where the main economic product is cocaine. I'll just call you a moron for the ignorant statement you made..
On another note, it's amazing how this country allows some of you dickweeds to live in it. Why don't you be thankful that they allow you to lead pathetic low class lives in the porn industry.

Counting the days until you guys loose freedom of speech.
