Arles seemed to be the most popular, but it didn't work. It wouldn't recurse directories and it tries to make galleries when all I want is to reduce the image (disc) size of all my images.

CompuPic Pro is the tool you need. It does virtually everything that one needs to do with images.

Use 'Actions' in phptoshop and you'll be able to do it.

You record the action and then go to
file > automate >batch >

i have adobe and it has a bug in it.

i save a thumb at 30-40 JPEG quality in 'save for web' and get it down to 3k. i save a thumb at 3-4 JPEG quality in 'save as' (which is about the same as above) and get it down to only 6k. even at the lowest setting (horrible quality that you can hardly make out) and it goes down to only 5k.

why is there this difference between save for web and save as???

batch processing can only use 'save as', so i'm fucked.

please help me if you know how.

Smartsaver pro does a pretty good job, but it doesn't save to the original file names, so you'd need to do it before anything else.

I do this with Photoshop all the time.. If anyone's interested in how our site works a bit.. I just grab the sample images I'm going to use for a review, run photoshop's batch on a directory with the pictures, it turns original.jpg into original-t.jpg and saves optimized for web at the quality I chose when I created the automate script.. The script simply contains "open" and "save for web"

Anyways I just upload the files into a directory on the FTP and boom it's all done.

Por ejemplo.. http://www.adultsitesurfer.com/view_...hp?site_id=591

a powerful program like photoshop should be able to do it, but i can't figure it out. THE PROBLEM IS THE DIRECTORY RECURSION. I DON'T WANT THE FILES TO BE SAVED ALL IN THE SAME DIRECTORY which is what adobe does!

anyway, I'm going to try some of these other progs and let u know what really works.

You're getting too picky bro.. You can have it do one directory at a time and make the files with something easy to see.. For example with my -t I could simply start->find->*-t in /whatever/ and copy or move them all into a single directory by click dragging.. Problem solved.

And oh yeah, when I run my batch it asks me A> where to execute the files B> where to save the files.. I pick the same directory because of my situation, you could output anywhere.

ok i'm downing SuperJPG (http://www.midnightblue.com/superjpg/download.htm) and giving it a try... i'll let u know what happens.

it's all about the recursion... i've tried 3 programs that are excellent so far, except they can't handle the recursion of directories.

FUCK.

SuperJPG doesn't recurse down through subdirectories. It does the exact same thing Adobe Photoshop does, which is saves all the files into the same directory.

Does anyone know of a program that can recusively compress JPG images and overwrites the originals (or at least creates a backup with the same initial directory structure)?

I am not sure what you mean by recurse, but none the less have you tried CompuPic Pro, latest version?

CompuPic Pro (http://www.photodex.com/products/pro/) also does not work. I can't even select multiple directories in it.

-----

what i mean by recursing directories is batch processing sub-directories, not just the current directory.

i have images sorted via folders named according to the girl, as follows:

/images/girlname1/001.jpg ... 045.jpg
/images/girlname2/001.jpg ... 075.jpg
/images/girlname3/001.jpg ... 125.jpg
/images/girlname4/001.jpg ... 035.jpg
etc.

and i have to process ALL of those files. CompuPic Pro was one worse than all the others I have tried (Adobe Photoshop, SuperJPG, Display, Arles) as it could not even process all the sub-folders. At least the others could process them, but were unable to properly save them in the same directory structure. I'm still waiting to try irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/) once the website comes up again...

Surely someone must know how to do this? This seems to be a problem that many webmasters would have run into in the past!

Maybe the software does not exist for what you want it to do?

Case Closed! XAT JPEG Disc Optimizer does the job. I highly recommend it for anyone who need to batch process sub-folders.

I highly doubt it, but that doesn't mean such a prog can be found. I guess it's a matter of doing a fair bit of diggin'.

Let us know how you go HQ, I wouldn't mind a prog with recursion. Btw have you tried Thumbsplus? I used it a while back but can't comment on the recursion thang.
