Domain Snatched yesterday-Un fucking believable!

Last night I wanted to register the domain "oldhodog" for a friend who hubby and I help out with a page. I "directnicked" it and also checked the availability with the server company. Full of joy that the domain was still available I went to bed because it was getting late. This morning I tried to register it. Guess what? Gone! Someone else registered it last night

Domain Name: oldhodog.com
ICANN Registrar:
NAMEKING.COM, INC.
Created:
22-Sep-2006
Expires:
22-Sep-2007
Registrar Status:
REGISTRAR-LOCK
Whois Server:
whois.nameking.com
Name Server:
NS11.MALTUZI.COM

I don't know what the fuck is going on, but I can only advidse all fellow webmasters to register a domain right when you check its availability because I smell a fucking rat. Something is fishy here. Somebody must have gotten his hands on my query last night and registerd the domain right away.

No big loss here, we are very creative when it comes to domain names. It sitll sucks because there is something going on.

My hsuband also remembered talking to a dude in Vegas two years ago who said he checked a domain from work and when he came back home 12 hours later to register it, it was gone.

that SUCKS.

I've heard of people having a form of spyware that might be involved in broadcasting a domain inquiry.
I grabbed a few names last night. Now I'm glad I did!

Hey, I don't have time to explain the details of how / why this happened, but it's because of some outdated ICANN rules that allow registrars to chill on a name for 5 days for free.

Wait a week and your domain will be availible again. Also, I would advise you edit your post so no one here acts like a douchebag and registers it in 5 days for real-real.

No spyware here. Run Mac and Unix, Firewall and and SpyAlert anti spyware software, plus, I live so far from the next house that nobody can sneak up in our driveway and log into our network without getting his ass shot first by our AK-47 toting redneck neighbor.

OK, thanks for the advice. Take the domain, guys, I already registered another one now. Would still be nice to find out how exactly this happened, the nic says the domain expires on 9/22/07?

Are you really surpised?

It makes perfect sense that inquiries would be rich data harvest material with immediate resale value.

Sorry, you missed the domain you wanted, but I bet you might be doing things differently next time.

Don't do your Whois lookups with them anymore. They're obviously allowing data to be shared and used.

Use this program.
http://www.gena01.com/win32whois/

Never had a problem doing it this way.

i wouldn't "directnick" a domain or for that matter use any other third party registrars for whois.

if you're on unix it's even easier to use builtin whois to check domains and safer too.

Domain kiting. They register thousands of domains, put up a parking page, collect the cash for 5 days, then let the domain drop.

I've heard of this happening before. If you find something good get it right away. There has to be a leak from inside one of the domain companies you searched on or manybe they own the company that snatched up your domain...

I've had two domains snatched and then they were available again a few days later. Both times I had used whois.sc to initially check for them.

ICANN needs to do something about domainers and bottom feeders looking for old traffic domains.

As far as I can see this applies to random domains or domains that are close to well know domains.

What I want to know is how a query like mine at directnic gets out to the domian snatchers within hours? What scumbag company is that?

Use godaddy to check on names, then use your registrar of choice to register. Godaddy uses SSL, which provides more security. Plus, they don't register good finds.

There was an article on Digg a while ago involving this type of thing and CNET.

I totally agree. Domain buying is a multi million dollar business. Do you really think these guys that own registries make most of their money from helping people register an $8.99 domain? Don't trust any of em.

This happened to me with multiple domains searching whois.sc

It has NEVER happened to me using GoDaddy's domain search tools. I tested.

I have also heard of this happening, and I don't know if it is a matter of information sharing or what. I DO know that I have a client or two that ICQ me if they have an idea for domain names that they want to register, just to make sure that it is completely processed.

I think it is always best to register a domain name when you see it and it is available. I encourage this because our (Moniker's) clients have the a 4 day "grace period" allowing them to delete the domain and get a refund to thier Moniker account (minus a small reprocessing fee).

I definitely feel for you on this one, JennyS!

GoDaddy sells the information as well. I've searched for domains on GoDaddy and when i went to register them a couple days later they are taken.
