just took the New Motorcycle out for the 2nd time .. (first bike ever)

last week when i first got the bike i took it out and it put fear in me for the first time in years .. I was just riding it around the block but way different then i expected. after the first turn I realized that it was a lot of Hot steel and I could really get hurt if I wasn't careful ...

So after a few days of putting it off ( I'm sure out of fear .. I was just nerves ) I took it out again today. the first time around i was afraid of the bike jumping away and was losing track on my gears .. just not focused and nervous .. stalled it a few times going into first ( I was giving it to much gas) after talking to a few guys that ride .. i realized that i don't really have to gas it till it starts to roll a bit .. I also only stuck to 1st and 2nd gear .. took it slow and was able to keep track of the gears easy .. turns were much better and i had a lot of fun .. The fear will always be there but i guess that's good .. But I feel much better about riding it now and I'll take the safety course.

The straight bars probably aren't the best to learn on but they feel OK ..

here's a pic .. It's a 99 Honda shadow 600 .. the seat was cut down ...straight pipes sound great and was painted flat black .... runs great and i got it for less the $1k so i won't feel bad if i drop it.

let out the clutch till you feel the bike moving and give it some gas, should be a smooth motion. You will get use to it :-)

yeah .. i only have a few more weeks to ride it before it's too cold out ... I don't mind it being cool out because i can wear a jacket and gloves .. in-case i do go down it's a little more protection. I just have to watch the leaves and shit.

Didn't you get proper riding lessons?

I guess the best tip I can give is to always look where you want to go, because you end up going where you look!

No lessons yet .. I'm going to take a course in mid October that also includes the road test .. it's 3 days and they do classroom safety and also supply the bikes for you to learn on .. they do all the figure 8's and get you road ready .. at the end if you do well enough they can give you a pass on the road test .. it's like $300 but worth it

That's the friction zone. I would really recommend buying some of these DVD's: at www.ridelikeapro.com - they have helped new and old riders. I have the "Learn to Ride the Easy Way" and "Ride like a Pro for Women" (which might be something your wife is interested in?). Ebay has the videos for cheaper and Ride like a pro 3 was pretty good.

They have so much information and techniques that will be good for you.

I'm also glad you're taking the class - you will learn so much hands on. Do they provide the bikes or do you have to bring your own?

That took me so long to get used to. Another tip is to be aware of ALL cars. They never pay attention to motorcycles.

the course supplies the bikes and helmets (i may bring my own helmet ... not big on wearing one that 100 others have) all I have to bring is jeans / jacket / boots and gloves ..

Man riding gets under your skin.
As for the stalling and learning the friction zone, one thing we did during our riding course was rev the engine real hard and then try to go as slow as possible using just the clutch. (Of course we we're using thier bikes) That should help you get the feel.

The fear goes away after a little practice. I remember my first time riding my bike thought I was going to crash so went 20mph max, after a week or two I was ready and wanting to take it out on the freeway. I miss my bike

Good starter bike, my first bike was a Harley 650, haven't ridden in 11 years though. I'd really like to get a nice cruiser.

Nobody wants a Harley. Read here why:

http://www.goingfaster.com/angst/noharley2.html

Our riding lawnmower has more HP than a Harley.

BMW or a Honda, or, a Suzuki Hayabusa, if you're brave.

And remember, always dress for teh fall, never for the ride.
